Wu Yi Tea Diet Plan Part I

by Caitlin Ryan

I have been telling you all about wu yi tea and its remarkable health benefits and weight loss capabilities. Wu yi (also known as oolong) tea can help, and I highly recommend it, but you need diet and exercise if you want to look and feel fantastic. I am excited to share with you a diet meal plan that I follow regularly to stay fit and healthy.

I will be doing this in two parts because I want you to understand the weight loss plan. I will explain the basics behind the weight loss plan today and give you specific foods and recipes in the next blog post. This way, you will be able to adjust and come up with more weight loss meals with wu yi tea and continue to lose weight.

The most important piece is incorporating foods that are practical, satisfying and nutritionally dense. You want foods that have plenty of nutrients per bite, yet do not rack up too many calories in a day. Alongside these foods, you will be drinking plenty of wu yi tea.

I know you might be concerned that you cannot do this because you do not enjoy healthy foods like whole grains and veggies. The secret to success with eating healthy foods is to know how to flavor these foods!

The following flavorings are virtually zero calorie natural alternatives for flavoring food: pepper sauces, vinegars, Dijon mustards (no honey Dijon’s!), onions, garlic, and tomatoes. In order to lose weight, it is highly important that you consume plenty of fiber found in grains and veggies. Fiber is very important for weight loss.

Skipping breakfast is one of the easiest ways to SABOTAGE your weight loss efforts. Studies have found that people are more in shape and at a better body weight when they make time for a healthful breakfast on a regular basis. I used to run out the door without eating a thing. Now I know how important it is to make that time!

When I made time for a healthy breakfast, I lost 5 pounds of weight that very first week! I simply set my alarm clock 15 minutes earlier and took the time to eat a healthful breakfast and sip on a mug of oolong tea! Your metabolism will be higher and you will be able to burn more calories throughout the day.

Throughout the day, you can drink wu yi tea either hot or iced. I like to brew a big pitcher of wu yi tea in the morning. (Secret! Throw in a few bags of flavored herbal teas such as blueberry or peach!) Take the wu yi tea with you in a portable mug.

The tea counts as part of your daily water intake and staying hydrated is important if you want to lose weight, so drink up! If you are sensitive to caffeine, switch to decaf oolong tea in the afternoon.

Contrary to many fad diets, you do not want to starve yourself while you attempt to lose weight. Eating small yet frequent meals is the best way to boost your metabolism and lose body fat!

I cannot tell you how much easier weight loss is if you plan and prepare in advance. You are going to want to stock your kitchen with plenty of fresh, prepared veggies such as spring greens and assorted, colorful veggies. Purchase a variety of zero-calorie flavors and try keeping plenty of lean protein choices on hand in the freezer such as chicken or turkey breast. Keep canned tuna (water-packed) in the pantry.

You can even plan the night before by preparing and extra piece of lean protein for the next day’s wu yi tea diet.

The Joy of Cooking With Tea

by Sarah Flemming

As tea becomes more and more popular cooks are beginning to use it more too, as a way to add a new flavor to dishes. A similar thing happened with coffee when Starbucks helped the already well-liked beverage become even more popular.

Tea goes well with food so it feels like a natural step to start utilizing it as a flavor-enhancer, the same way we utilize herbs and spices. And there are other great reasons for the enhanced interest in cooking involving tea.

With the many known health advantages of tea any new way to slip it into your daily routine is advantageous. Another advantage of cooking with tea is that it’s an effective way to add or enhance the flavor of a dish without adding unwanted elements like fat, calories or sodium, that sometimes accompany other flavor amplifiers.

Although cooking with tea may seem like a new trend, it has actually been around almost as long as the beverage itself. The British have used tea to flavor tea cakes and to stew dried fruit for years. The Japanese have been enjoying ochazuke, which is made by pouring green tea over rice before serving. And the Chinese have been using black tea to smoke and simmer foods for centuries.

Popular cooks have been expanding these uses of tea and finding that even small additions are able to lend a richness to dishes without overwhelming the true flavor of the dish. For example try adding a tablespoon of English Breakfast to a dressing, or a Jasmine teabag or two to rice while it is cooking.

Cooking with tea doesn’t have to be restricted to the appetizer or main course. Tea can also add a complex taste to dessert. Rich black teas like Darjeeling and English Breakfast have deep tones that help strengthen the flavor of chocolate desserts. Green teas can add a zing to creamy desserts while they also tend to smooth the tart flavor of a citrus sorbet. And aromatic teas like chai can add a nice flavor to rich, heavier items like frosting or cheesecake.

You can let the creative juices flow when preparing food with tea. It may be applied as a spice by adding tea leaves to a pepper grinder; you might even want to add white pepper, or some other spice of choice with the tea in the spice grinder. Tea can also be used as a marinade. If you’re not sure where to begin, or if you need a little guidance, check out a cookbook that specializes in cooking with tea.

If you’re just starting to use tea in your cooking it may help to think of the tea as an ingredient or a spice, instead of a beverage, and go with your instincts. Also don’t forget about all the forms of tea — you can use tea leaves, brewed tea, tea bags or if you like green tea you can use matcha green tea powder to sprinkle on things like fruit. Then there are all the varieties — Earl Grey, English Breakfast, Gunpowder, Sencha.

So get creative and enjoy the benefit of this whole new world of flavorings. Happy Cooking

Is Wu Long or Wu Yi Tea YOUR Fountain of Youth?

by Caitlin Ryan

Did you know that merely drinking a few delicious mugs of tea per day can boost the quality of your skin and fight premature aging? Wu yi tea has been drunk for centuries in the Asian world and thankfully, it is finally catching on in the Western world. Its age-fighting capabilities are remarkable! It may be YOUR answer to maintaining youthful skin!

Though both wu long and wu yi tea have become popular for both weight loss and age fighting, some proponents would have you believe that one is better than the other. Is this true? Let us look at the background on both teas.

Tea begins as a plant called camellia sinensis. The tea leaves are picked at different times and then prepared in different ways. The four major teas are black tea, green tea, white tea and oolong tea and they are fermented in different ways or harvested at different times.

White tea and green tea are unfermented and considered highly nutritious, yet they have a bit of a bitter, grassy flavor. White tealeaves are picked prior to the opening of the bud making it a bit milder. Black tea is fermented for a long time and thus, it is not as nutritious as green tea; however, the flavor is more agreeable to our Western palates.

Oolong tea is fermented for a short time. Because the process is shorter, oolong tea is still highly nutritious, but the fermenting process makes the tea milder in aroma and flavor. Wu long and wu yi tea are both oolong teas. Wu long tealeaves are harvested during the first cycle of leaf growth on the tea plant. The plant is then allowed to regenerate for more cycles of growth and harvest.

Tea connoisseurs tend to believe that because of this, wu long tea is of higher quality and it is usually priced higher than wu yi tea. Wu yi tea, though, has the same health benefits and is just as capable of fighting aging as wu long tea. It is usually less expensive, and the flavor and aroma differences are so subtle that I personally feel that it is not worth the extra dollars to buy wu long tea versus wu yi tea. Both teas will help me maintain my youthful skin!

Tea can be compared to wine in this manner. Though there are some lovely wines available for $50 or more a bottle, if you can purchase a $20 bottle of Shiraz that is quite enjoyable, why spend $50? At the same time, you probably would not find the same enjoyment with a bottle of Shiraz that cost $5, right? For this reason, you probably will not find a lot of wu yi tea on the supermarket shelves next to the economy packs of black tea!

Oolong tea, whether it is wu yi or wu long, contains powerful antioxidants that fight free radical damage and thus help slow down the process of aging. The signs of aging can be seen in your face when free radicals take their toll on skin health at the cellular level. Collagen breaks down and soon, fine lines begin to appear as well as sagging, fragile skin. Wu yi tea can reverse this and help create more youthful, glowing skin!

Antioxidants in wu yi tea are necessary for skin cell replenishment. Wu yi tea has a lovely aroma and flavor that calms the mind.

Is Oolong a Secret Age-Fighting Weapon?

by Caitlin Ryan

Women in Asia seem to have more beautiful, flawless skin well beyond their youthful years. It seems as though time stood still and allowed them to maintain this gorgeous look for many years. What do you suppose their secret is? Could it be oolong tea?

Asian women tend to live cleaner lives. They consume better diets and are generally exposed to less environmental toxins. These are few of the reasons behind their gorgeous, youthful skin.

We should all strive for a better diet full of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins; however, we cannot do much to escape environmental toxins from industrial facilities, car exhaust and chemicals. This is where oolong tea can help fight the damage, prevent premature aging and improve the youthful appearance of your skin!

Tea differs in its preparation, but it all comes from the same plant called camellia Sinensis. Some tea goes through a fermentation process and others do not which is what alters the flavor and color of tea.

Black tea is highly fermented (crushed and oxidized). Green tea is not fermented. White tea is green tea that is picked earlier. Oolong has a unique background and it is semi-fermented.

Wu Liang was picking tea leaves when a deer interrupted him. He left to hunt the deer and the picked tea leaves were abandoned in the sun. They began to ferment.

He returned a few days later and found the tea leaves partially oxidized by the sun. He proceeded to prepare the tea anyway and found that this oxidation process had made the tea more delicate than green tea. It no longer had a bitter grassy taste!

Oolong tea, green tea and white tea are the most beneficial teas to fight the signs of aging, but oolong tea has a nicer flavor because of the semi-fermentation process. Tea is capable of fighting aging and restoring more youthful skin due to its phytochemicals, which is a fancy name for antioxidants.

UV rays, chemicals and pollutants amongst others produce free radicals in our bodies. These are the source of premature aging because of the effect they have at the cellular level.

They destroy cellular membranes and alter genetic material. As we age, it becomes more and more difficult to fight free radicals and repair the damage. As well, we stop regenerating cells as much as we did when we were younger.

All of this affects our overall health and the breakdown of all tissue. Your skin starts to wrinkle, sag and become more fragile. You start to see all of those early signs of aging.

Free radicals take electrons from healthy molecules in a process called oxidation. Antioxidants stop this process. Involved in repair and regeneration, antioxidants in oolong tea can slow premature aging, and restore the health and appearance of your skin! Youthful skin is healthy skin!

Available in many varietals, oolong tea has a wonderful taste and is moderately priced.
