Decorating on a Budget

by Brian Spilner

You are dying to change the look of a room or many rooms in your home. However you know that it will cost a lot of money to accomplish the look you are hoping for. Or maybe you just think it will cost a lot of money. There are many ways in which you can change the look of a room without doing much work or without spending a bunch of money. You don’t need to go out and buy all new furniture or a new bed to get a new theme into a room. Following are some great tips that will help you accomplish cheaper decorating.

Modern decor is all about a minimal look. A room that you want to place the modern look in doesn’t need to have tons of things in it. You need plain things that can look good, but not have too many accessories. Something that is very geometric in style. Accomplish this in the bedroom by making a new headboard. You can use Styrofoam and cut out shapes like triangles and stars, than clue them to the headboard. Don’t forget to paint them before you place them up though. You can also add a nice fabric to the headboard that is modern looking.

There are other ways that you can use things like sheets or blankets that you never use. Buy some dye and make sure it’s a color that will go in the room you are redecorating. Now dye these pieces of linen that you are using. You can now sew them into slip covers for furniture, curtains, or even throw pillows. You have saved a tremendous amount of money on these items but still changed the look of a room.

Area rugs or throw pillows added into a room can make the room look totally different. Again you can make the pillows yourself. Rugs you can find that won’t cost a lot of money either. Just make sure what you buy goes with the room design

Get those old area rugs together, and if they still match the color that is in your new room, you can change the look of them quickly and easily. Get a cool looking stamp, something that is geometric in design if you’re still sticking with the modern look. Put some paint on the stamp and then put it on the area rug. Now you have created a new area rug that will fit in great with the new look of your room. And again you haven’t spent a lot of money.

But let’s say that the area rugs you have don’t go with the colors you are changing the room too? Well than you need to go and buy a cheap area rug that is a color that will fit into the room. All you need to do is use the stamp on this new rug and change the look of it so it will fit in nicely. Or if you want you can even leave it plain if it fits in the room nicely already.

So you see you can redecorate and not spend a lot of money. These are only a few ideas, try them and see how much you can change the look of your home dcor.

Planning For Your Home Decorating Project

by Lucy Barnett

Unless you plan to hire a home decorator to come into your home and redecorate you need to do some careful planning to make sure that you can get more for your buck. Home decorating can be very expensive so you want to make sure that you plan every dime as you decorate.

Before you jump in and start painting the walls, you should do some research and careful planning. A successful design is always well thought out. You can make small changes along the way, but you should at least have a basic plan in mind. As you consider how you want your new design to look, think about the various elements of design. How can you make your home more beautiful with the help of floor coverings, mirrors, lighting, furniture, paints and paintings, wall hanging, carvings, and flowers? If you want to create the design of your dreams, you will need to use each of these elements within the room.

Home decorating can cost a lot of money if you are not careful. The money you spend in home decorating can improve the value of your home but you may not get very far if you don’t have a budget worked out. Always make yourself a budget and stick to it. The budget you choose is going to help you get the material you want and create a new look.

Furniture is a major home decorating expense but you can avoid purchasing new furniture by recreating a new look with your old furniture. This will give your furniture a new look, your room a new look, and money in your wallet. You can purchase slip covers or make them on your own with material you already have at home.

Floor coverings are an important part of any room design, so leave room in your budget to purchase a great area rug. Rugs can be found in different colors, shapes, and materials so you can customize the look to your room’s design. Rugs also come in a variety of price ranges so you can always find a great affordable option.

What color scheme do you plan to go with? Every room should have a different look and feel according to the way that you want it. You can decide your color based on a certain object or preference in a room. Begin by selecting throw pillows or candles that you plan to use in the room.

Window treatments can be very expensive but you can save money by creating your own look with what you already have. You can mix and math colors to create a soft look or a bright and cheerful look at your window. The window treatment you select will draw attention to the room.

Making The Perfect Floor Plan Before You Place Anything!

by Emilio Lopez

It’s a common mistake to buy decorative items prior to ensuring the space can accommodate them merely because the items look so cute! As a result, you could end up with fixtures you couldn’t even use, even if you wanted to so badly. Where would you put them? A solution would be to let go of other things to give way to your impulsive buys. Would you be willing to do that?

An important thing to bear in mind to exempt yourself from the group of people who have been there and done this big decorating mistake is to prepare a floor plan. It doesn’t matter if you can’t draw a stick. This floor plan is not for a professional designer to review but for your reference. Yes, it’s for your eyes only. You don’t even have to show it to the salespeople at the home decor shop. A floor plan will guide you in determining the available space and which fixture will fit.

This may sound awfully boring but taking measurements really helps. When you have numbers, you buy furniture not because you have a gut feel it will fit, but because you know it will. Hence, you spend your money wisely. Sure, stores can give a refund, but do you know what a nightmare it is to process getting a refund? You might as well force what you bought into the unfitting space. Measurements guarantee the object will work as a decoration.

This can make a large difference in everything from sofas, armchairs, coffee tables, and entertainment centers. All of these items are commonly used in a traditional living room, yet making these purchases before knowing how well they will fit into your space could leave you with a dilemma when it comes to their placement.

As you scout for possible decorative materials, you can already buy an area rug that catches your eyes. It can give you a design idea and how to position other objects in the room. Moreover, with an area rug, your room will have an added boost of decorative appeal.

A floor plan can be a decorator’s bestfriend. Mistakes can be prevented and better choices can be made. You will be getting your money’s worth and will be making sound decisions based on facts, that is measurements, and not just on what you think and feel will look good and fit well in a room.

Decorating Fun: Preparing Your Child’s Playroom

by Barnie Tyson

Now that your precious miracle is walking, it is time for the perfect playroom. Whether you have a spare bedroom, an attic room or a basement room, your child needs a place to call their own to explore and grow.

Safety and fun are priorities and they should always go together. The room should be clean, child-friendly, and safe for your baby. Have a storage for all your child’s toys, so there will be no litter in the playroom. This also prevents accidents, no matter how minor.

Painting the playroom is a super enjoyable task. Bright colors are ideal to give the room a cheery and happy ambiance. Your child will also prefer loud colors as opposed to dark tones. The more colorful, the happier the room will look.

Decorate with lots of artworks. Posters, cartoons, stuffed toys, art materials and other things kids have fun with. You can also display your child’s artworks and photographs.

Playing can be safer with a floor treatment. This will prevent slipping accidents. One solution is to use area rugs. They can be cushions for the floor and are also great decorative materials.

Placing an area rug at the center of the room looks good and protects well. Toddlers often run around but usually settles in the wider space. Have a large rug in the middle, and if the playroom still permits, have a smaller rug as a cushion for a piece of furniture. It can be for his table and chair, his train set or the storage cabinet.

Using an area rug or two on a painted wood or tiled floor is very versatile. When your child wants to play with roller skates, or riding toy or just haul out the finger paints, the rug can be easily rolled back for playtime. After clean-up, the rug rolls out again in perfect condition.

Maintaining the rugs’ cleanliness too is a no-fuss task even if kids are generally messy with juice spills and food stains. They do wipe their hands and mouth wherever they can. Area rugs are considerably easier and faster to clean than carpets, and if brought to the dry-cleaners, way cheaper too than carpet cleaning.

There are area rugs especially made for children with lots of designs. Depending on the theme of your choice, you can have rugs full of animal images, numbers, shapes, nature, cartoon characters and more. Your child will have an awesome time looking at the fun rugs in the playroom.

Balancing Out An Interior Design

by Gillian Roland

When a person is working to bring interior design to a room which they may be working on, the most important quality that they need to imbue their work with is that of balance. One can use a number of different qualities, themes and textures within their work but unless they balance everything out which they are doing, the design will become garish and unsettling to anyone who enters into the space. This will make the design a failure as the point of anyone working with interior design is to form a space which anyone can feel comfortable and relaxed in.

The size is an important element in creating balance. The objects should be suitably sized with the space of the room. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that a big room can hold large furniture as well. This way, the room will have a more intimate effect as opposed to using small objects where the large space will look even more engulfing.

The same principle is applied to a small room. You would want to create a bigger place with your limited space by not overdoing it with the decors and furniture. In fact, it’s advisable to stick to minimal objects and space-friendly furnishings.

Area rugs are solutions to the size dilemma, among many others of their usefulness in the decorating world. A rug can bring together objects by a simple placement on the base of the furniture. It also gives a warm and inviting atmosphere to the room. The vertical or horizontal pattern of an area rug can elongate the look of the floor thus, creating an impression of a bigger space.

The scale that a person ends up using to design a room will ultimately be a call of judgment. While there are certain guidelines which a person should follow while filling a space with decoration, making the person who will be dwelling there happy is the most important goal.

The balance in the room is merely a guide that the room will look pleasing to the eyes. When you like what you see and feel, then you are on the right track. If your guests feel comfortable and at home, then you know that you have created a room that is exactly like that - comfortable and welcoming.

How To Transform Your Kitchen Into A Special Family Room

by Hally Dugan

If there’s one room in the house that you should decorate as a special family room and an extension where you entertain guests, the kitchen should be in the top of the list. There’s this popular quote that says food brings people together, that no two hostile people can remain enemies after sharing a meal. Doesn’t that speak highly too of the place where you make your meals (added to the importance of eating and good food)? The kitchen should be regarded as a special part of the house and not merely where you prepare your meals. Transforming your kitchen into a lovely space can make it an instant favorite in your house.

Have a well-lit kitchen. Let in some natural light at daytime and have sufficient lighting at nighttime (not too bright). A poorly lit kitchen looks gloomy. Hang curtains that are flimsy enough to reflect the sunlight. You can also have a sheer panel that can be easily pulled up whenever you feel like having a look outside.

Next, add a comfortable rug. You may think a rug in the kitchen is a bad idea. After all, won’t it get stained and dirty from all the spills and grease splatters? You can add an element of softness to your room if you choose the right rug. Look for a rug that is scotch guarded to protect against stains. You could also consider using an outdoor rug that is meant to get wet and dirty. Braided rugs are another great option for the kitchen. Make sure you bring a comfortable rug into the room so your feet won’t ache as you spend hours cooking that thanksgiving dinner for the whole family.

Kitchen shelves aren’t just for storing utensils. You can use it as your display case. If you have a collection of china or other nice silverware and teacups, you can line them on the shelf as pretty add-ons to your kitchen.

Moods can be reflected through colors. Exude the warmth and jovial feelings in your kitchen by painting the walls a jolly color. Go for lighter shades to have a refreshing look. Remember, you’ll be cooking too so you don’t want to create an impression of more heat by using dark colors. You can be perspiring like crazy while baking the stuffed chicken, but the room will still look airy with a light-colored wall.

To maximize the positive mood, decorate with area rugs. Choose rugs that are stain resistant, lightweight for easy wash and dry, durable to withstand the coming and going of you and your family and guests, and soft for a better cushioning for your tired feet. Match the area rugs with the color of the kitchen. You can place one under the table and chairs, under the sink, by the entryway, and under the cooking stove or oven, whichever you use more often. Area rugs will boost the color and enhance the entire room. It will really look like welcoming place.

Lastly, don’t forget to keep your kitchen clean. Delegate chores even if you are voted as the family’s chef to maintain its polished look. Let’s admit it, the kitchen if not properly cared for can really take the toll of grease, oil, spills and incessant meal-preparing activities. Not to mention the unpleasant sight of unwashed dishes piled up in the sink. Decorate your kitchen for a new look only if you and your family are willing to maintain its cleanliness. Otherwise, poor decorsthe dirt and clutter will just ruin the supposedly cheery mood and the pretty kitchen design.

Just choose a circular mirror that can be placed within the plate’s center and put them together with perfect glue 1. Then, place a heavy object atop of it and allow it to dry for two hours.

You should also pay special attention to the lighting in your home. No matter how old your trusty lamp may be, it could be given the perfect makeover to freshen up your current home decorations. Dorm Room Essentials

by Jethro Willis

So you’re going to college? Congratulations! You’re finally moving out and gaining some independence. For some young people, college is their first opportunity to decorate their own space. Whether you are a brand new student or a seasoned veteran to the campus scene, you will want your dorm room to reflect your personal style. This tiny room will be your home for months, so you should create a space that is comfortable and inviting.

Some college students don’t bother decorating their dorm rooms because of the lack of budget. Some put off purchasing from discount or secondhand stores with the misconception that the finds are not as good as brand new ones. They can never be more wrong. A lot of things from discount and thrift shops are great deals. Don’t be discouraged with your limited budget or the idea of other’s used stuff. With creativity, you can make your dorm room as nice as any expensive penthouse, secondhand items or not.

Let’s start with the bed sheets and cover. The bed is a dorm room’s main furnishing. Those with very little space left don’t even bother with a desk and chair. The bed is an all-encompassing furniture that welcomes sleeping, studying, reading and eating. As a result, the bed can look worn and messy. If you want your dorm room to look better, pay attention to your bed. Cover it with nice beddings, in attractive colors to brighten up your room. Choose materials that are comfortable, especially in the colder months. Change its colors regularly to give your room a makeover every once in a while.

As with any limited space, avoiding clutter is vital not to aggravate the lack of space. Make use of every inch. Fill those cabinet drawers instead of placing stuff on the floor. Make use of the space under the bed to store your luggage, boxes and other bigger belongings. You can also temporarily use your empty luggage for keeping other things like books and extra clothes instead of crowding all your possessions in the small space.

Not being able to paint the walls doesn’t mean there’s no more way to decorate and add colors. You can have wall hangings in the form of artworks, fabric and area rug. If you have eye-catching posters, they make good alternatives to expensive paintings.

An area rug on the wall is unique and an area rug on the floor is classy. It can easily improve the look of the room despite the small size. Choose a rug that goes well with your bed coverings and other decors. You can also display rugs that suit the changing seasons…or your moods. If you want to liven up the living space, have an area rug in big patterns and interesting designs. You can also choose a round or oblong rug to be different from the majority rectangular-rug users. If you prefer a quiet atmosphere, decorate a dark-colored area rug with intricate details. Monotone in deep shades also make the room more sophisticated. Your dorm room will look so nice and comfortable that you might miss out on those parties and late-night hangouts. Oh-oh…don’t turn into an anti-social college folk, okay?

How To Effectively Use Contrast In Home Interior

by Randy Jenkins

The color scheme which you choose to employ on your next interior design project can make all of the difference in the world in the way the room ends up feeling. Designers are often attracted to very mono-toned colors because it presents the eye with a very direct image. Using these big blocks of color, one can often set up a great mood of contrast that makes a room interesting and dramatic. Something to keep in mind, however, is that a room also has to be comfortable enough to spend time in. Making a room too dramatic will often make this quality harder to deal with.

Dark and light are opposites but work well together. Opposites attract as they say, and when you apply the same principle in home decorating, you achieve a remarkable design. For instance, wood paired with a light shade of say, white, beige or pastel can immediately set off contrasting moods yet a well-coordinated one. Confused? Read on… Wood is a sturdy material, a semblance of masculine. A light-colored accent like pillows or drapes gives off a feminine, gentle look. Opposites but the effect is a balanced combination of hard and soft materials, and dark and light colors.

Textures can be another great way to balance out the color scheme in a room. A texture can give the eye more to dwell on and it won’t let one focus on the often stark contrasts which can take place. This will help the room to soften up some and become more inviting to any guest who may enter it. Making guests feel welcome and comfortable is an important part of any design job and using this type of textured contrast will aid in this.

Another softening technique is adding plants or flowers. A room that has a deep, dark motif will brighten up with colorful flowers and natural-colored plants. These decors open up the space, creating a welcoming atmosphere.

Area rugs work perfectly to achieve contrast. The color can either highlight a space or take away the attention from the room’s furnishings. It can create a unified look to the rest of the room. Even two contrasting colors can be harmonized by the use of an area rug. For example, a dark-colored coffee table paired with a bright-colored couch can look better together with an earth-colored sofa as their base.

Think about the colors you want. Consider the color scheme and decide if you will apply a contrast to your room. Suit the color with the existing elements such as the decorations and furniture.

Colors And Area Rugs As Inspirations

by Carter Holly

Living in a home that is not only relaxing, comfortable and cozy but also sets a mood for productivity and positive energy is the perfect combo. Arranging the space and decorating can directly influence these feelings.

If the space that you are moving into is small, you will want to make sure that you can arrange the furniture in your new place in a way that you will still have a great deal of mobility. Otherwise, you will feel as if you are too cramped to ever feel comfortable. On the same token, you will want to make sure that you have enough furniture and other fixtures in the room to accommodate having guests over because you will want to provide spaces for them to sit and even rest the drinks that you will inevitably be serving.

The way the room looks and consequently feels, as the appearance can affect the mood, will have an impact on your comfort and productivity. A too cramped space can make you ill at ease that relaxing in your own home can be impossible. On one hand, a too cozy room can cause you to be on rest mode all the time hindering you from accomplishing important tasks. This is a bad idea if you are a freelance worker. Same is true if you have not cleaned your place for quite some time.

Colors are said to have powerful energy. In Chinese culture, red is a highly revered color that symbolizes luck, power and good fortune. Many entrepreneurs prefer to be surrounded with red to summon the positive energy that will bring them these three energies. Incorporating meaningful colors into your home decorating does not necessarily imply the yellow roses your first love gave you. It signifies the symbolism of energy, interpretation of moods and their general association with feelings. For instance, white brings a calming aura, green speaks of nature, blue of tranquility, yellow means cheerfulness, brown denotes elegance, and so forth. Using significant colors in your living space can influence your feelings of motivation, energy and productivity, especially if it’s time to take out the trash.

Area rugs are decorative items available in various colors that you can freely use to gain your desired effects. Place an area rug in bold, loud colors near your workstation for an inspiration to work your mind, while have a rug in pastel color in your bedroom to help you unwind. Better yet, maximize area rugs to complement your entire place, matching them with the theme and other furnishings.

Decorating should be about you. Bluntly speaking, who cares about other people? It is you who will be in that living space for years, longer than a dozen houseguests combined. Therefore, choosing decors that YOU like is vital. Your room or your home should work well for you. If not, don’t be afraid to try something different. After all, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before finding your prince. Welcome the trial and error process. Sooner or later, you’ll find the design, style, color and decors that are meant for you.
