They grew many foods like avocados, peppers, beans, corn, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and squash. They hunted for deer, turkey, rabbit, and quail. Chocolate is grown in Mexico, and was originally served as a drink to Aztec royalty.

Once the Spanish arrived, their cuisine was introduced. Bread, cheese, beef, and cream were added to the native foods. They introduced chickens, sheep and pigs, as well as wheat and sugarcane. By the time Spain gave up ruling Mexico, their influence was well blended with the native cuisine.

Corn is a major part of Mexican meals. Cornmeal, known as masa, is made into a dough that can be formed into tortillas, empanadas, or tamales. Corn is also added to soups, stews, and other dishes. Tortillas made of flour are more common in northern Mexico. Chili peppers are also a main part of the Mexican diet. Jalapenos, poblano, and Serrano chilies are just a few of the common choices in the Mexican household.

Beans also provide a good source of protein in Mexican meals. Pinto beans are found in the north, while black beans are popular in the Yucatan peninsula. There are many different varieties used throughout Mexico to make dishes like frijoles (refried beans).

A Detox Diet for Cellulite

by El Bilson

Cellulite is a condition that affects many people in various parts of the world. A detox diet for cellulite is something that may help you get the skin you desire.

Are you looking into doing a detox diet for cellulite? While there is no specific diet that will completely get rid of cellulite, detox diets can help. There are several detox diets that you can try and we will look at where to find more information on these special diets.

Wondering how a detox diet helps improve your skin? What does it mean to detox the body? This article is a good starting point for more information on detox diets and how they work. Before you start a detox diet it is important to check with your doctor. This is especially crucial if you have health problems or are on any medications.

Several organs in the body help clean toxins from the blood. The main detox organ is the liver. However other organs such as the kidneys, intestines, lungs, lymph, and skin all play their part in cleaning the body. Our bodies are a miracle in that all the systems work together.

After many years of cleaning the body, these organs can become overworked. Toxins build up, and hamper the functioning of the cleansing organs. Cellulite and the overall appearance of the skin will improve once you change your diet. And a good way to start is by detoxifying your body through a good cleanse. After that you can choose low fat, high fiber foods that will continue to improve the functioning of the body.

Many of us are eating processed foods that are high in fat and low in fiber. With the wide availability of junk food, it is easy to get off track. My husband and I travel a lot and most of our meals are consumed in restaurants. Many people give into their cravings for french fries or pizza on a regular basis. But over time these foods and others like them cause the body to be loaded down with toxins.

These toxins put a lot of work on the liver and kidneys and the other detox organs. Going on a brief detox diet gives these organs a rest and allows them to clean the toxins from the body. Detoxifying the body allows these organs to play catch up on the work they are designed for.

The term cellulite is used to describe the dimpled look that is found on the skin. As skin ages the connective tissue, called septa, in the subcutaneous layer of the skin loses its elasticity. When this happens, the fat deposits that are a normal part of the body push up between the connective tissue. This is what causes cellulite to have a rippled or dimpled appearance.

Changing what we eat and drink can improve circulation to the septa. When blood circulation is improved, a reduction in cellulite can be achieved over time. Of course, this is a change in lifestyle. Permanent results require us to give up some of the foods we may enjoy. But the good news is that the healthy change in diet will not only improve the look of skin but will result in a healthier body as a whole.

There are a number of detox diet for cellulite to choose from. Visit your local library or bookstore or do a web search and you will find many methods to detoxify the body. Some of these detox diets include fasting. Others are liquid diets that include fresh fruit and vegetable juices. Whatever method you choose to detox, remember that you are giving your body a chance to rest. This will lead to not only improve cellulite, but improved health overall.

Planning a vegetable garden- what you must know

by Petra Spink

Deciding to plant a vegetable garden can be rewarding, and be a great source of food for enjoyment and use. When planning a vegetable garden, you can decide which vegetables you want to grow and ensure that no bad chemicals or pesticides come in contact with your food.

While many people think putting out a vegetable garden is too much trouble, it really isn’t that hard and can be quite fun for everyone involved. If you take care of your vegetable garden properly, then you will be able to grow some of the most delicious, fresh vegetables.

Make sure that you choose a bright sunny area that receives at least six hours of sunlight. If you are planning on growing spinach or lettuce or other leafy crops than it will be fine if you choose a more shady area as these are more tolerant of shade and cooler temperatures.

There are things you can do to improve the quality of your soil. For instance, consider adding any of the following: compost, leaf mold, rotted manure, peat moss or other types of organic matter. While it is true that it is difficult to grow things in clay soil, adding vermiculite or humus will enable draining thus making it a more viable option. Squeeze a handful of soil to see if it crumbles while still retaining its shape. If that’s the case, you’re pretty much set and need only to add in basic enriching materials.

Mulching around the plants in your vegetable garden in early summer is crucial. A thick layer of mulch applied will improve the moisture retention in the area around the plants as well as deter weeds and some insects. Good mulch products include compost, straw, hay, or shredded bark.

If you are planning a vegetable garden for the long term, then you should think about putting in a drip irrigation system for watering your garden. Your vegetables will get water directly from your drip irrigation system in their roots where the vegetables need it most. You can also put a timer on the irrigation system that will allow the system to come on at the time you have it set for.

One of the most important parts of planning a vegetable garden is to choose your vegetables that you want to plant and which will grow well in your garden. You will want to pick out vegetables that you and your family will eat. Some people like to grow things for the sake of doing it and don’t even like what they are growing. Remember, not all of your neighbors might enjoy them either!

There really is nothing quite like growing your own produce safe in the knowledge you are feeding your family nothing but pure goodness. Your hard work and effort will pay off so long as you stick to some of the basic rules and tips that people with experience are all too ready to hand out. Don’t try and reinvent the wheel just follow the guides that have brought success to others.

Easy Crockpot Tips

With a few easy tips, your crockpot can become the best appliance in your kitchen. First of all, never overfill your crockpot. If you fill it more than three-quarters full, your food will not cook properly. You also want to make sure it is at least half full. If you fill it less than that, your food will be overdone by dinnertime.

If you are using fresh vegetables, put them on the bottom. They will take longer to cook than your meat. This is a bit hard to believe, but it is true. If you are using frozen vegetables, place them on top of your meat, since they will cook faster.

You may want to try browning your meat before placing it in the crockpot. This renders fat and caramelizes the natural sugars in the meat, creating a delicious flavor. If you wish to deglaze the pan afterwards with broth, water, or wine, you can add these tasty drippings to your crockpot so you can enjoy them later. Removing extra fat and skin will also help your meat cook better.

Tender ingredients like tomatoes, mushrooms, and dairy products should be added the last 30 to 45 minutes of cooking. Make sure the temperature is on low for dairy products to keep them from curdling. If you are adding thickeners like cornstarch, it should be added in the last hour with the temperature on high to activate their thickening qualities. Rice and pasta should be added during the last 45 minutes so they do not get too mushy.

Do not remove the lid during cooking unless you need to add additional ingredients. Try to do this all at once so you do not lose too much heat. Each time you open the lid; you should add another 30 minutes to your cooking time.

Meals You Can Make in the Crockpot

These easy tips can help make your crockpot useful and versatile. You can make almost anything in the crockpot. Pulled pork with barbecue sauce is easy in the crockpot, as is Asian chicken. Stew and chili are old standbys for the crockpot, as is chicken soup. Vegetable dishes like creamed corn with cream cheese is delicious for a side dish.

You can even bake breads and cakes in the crockpot! Desserts like apple brown betty, boiled peanuts and many different cakes can easily be made in the crockpot. As you can see, crockpots are even more versatile than most people think.

The 10 Secrets to cooking great fish recipes outdoors

by Stephen Kember

Great fish recipes come in various guises: grilled, poached and baked but so often the results are disappointing! So, when cooking fish outdoors what are the secrets to success? Here are 10 absolutely essential recommendations:

2. The most important thing to remember when cooking fish outdoors is not to over cook it. Fish soon becomes tough, flavorless and dry if over cooked. Remember fish are delicate and an outdoor cooking equipment can produce a harsh environment.

2. Quick and hot is the only safe way to retain moisture & flavor when cooking fish outdoors!

3. Fish easily breaks up when cooking so touch it as little as possible. Use a fish basket in a stockpot, or if grilling make sure that you oil the pan or grill well before use; and always use a fish slice to move or turn the fish, not other unsuited or heavy duty kit.

4. Always defrost your fish before cooking…… and if you can, always buy fresh not frozen fish; frozen fish after defrosting is often limp and watery!

5. Part of the problem when cooking fish is that its not consistently thick all along its length. As a result the thin ends get over cooked and the thick are not cooked through. The solution, buy fish that is consistently thick along its length; or where this isn’t possible, cut the thin ends off and grill those separately for less time.

6. Aim to serve 1/3 to1/2 lb of fish per person when cooking outdoors. This simple formula will stop you ending up with no fish left half way through serving up!

7. Its thickness not weight that decides how long a fillet of fish should be cooked.; freshness also counts. The simple rule of thumb for cooking fish is ten minutes/inch or five minutes per centimeter, calculating the time based on the depth at the thickest point of the fillet. Using more intuitive means you can simply look and when you see that the fish is no longer translucent and has become opaque & can be easily separated then its cooked; so get it off the heat immediately.

8. Be confident, use marinades when cooking with fish. These can work really well and create some glorious flavors. Fish needs very little time to marinade, at most an hour. You can also rub herbs & spices into the flesh. Wine also goes well with fish; drizzle it onto fish in its foil packets when baking or add it to the pan when your fish is simmering.

9. Make sure that you have the right outdoor cooking equipment for cooking fish. Its here that so many folk make a real mistake. Whether you want to bake, smoke, grill or poach there are some great tools that will transform your success and without them you’re going to be struggling. This article is not the place to review all but one cooker worth mentioning is the Bayou Classic ceramic grill. Whilst slightly more expensive than other cookers & stoves these are incredible because you can use them for baking, smoking, grilling & poaching; nothing compares. The ceramic design enables the cooking to be done under intense pressure sealing in the moisture as heat circulates and penetrates the food leaving it moist and full of flavor. No other type of grill will match this level of performance.

10. Ceramic grills are not for everyone but worry not as there are exceptional alternatives dependent on what you want to cook and how. If you want to start cooking fish outdoors and don’t have any outdoor cooking equipment then its recommended to buy a kit with everything included, stove, stockpots etc. If you’ve got a stove or got a fryer then buy what else you need individually. The choice today is amazing with: fish fryer pots, deep fryers and stainless steel, cast iron & aluminum deep fryers. Simply decide what will best meet your needs and get online as there are some great deals to be had.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Easy Chicken Recipes

by KC Kudra

Having to transform a raw chicken into something not only edible but delicious can strike fear into the heart of any novice cook. It is also true that raw chicken poses a salmonella risk and you have to take care when handling it and preparing it. Following a few simple hygiene rules however means that you will be fine. Wash your hands before and after handling raw chicken and clean all the surfaces touched by the chicken with hot, soapy water.

Make sure chicken is cooked all the way through and there are no pink bits inside. Finally, store raw chicken in the refrigerator, wrapped and not touching anything else. Keep it on the bottom shelf so that if any juices drip, they will not drip on to another food. If you follow these basic chicken-handling rules, there is no reason not to start making a few wonderful easy chicken recipes!

Chicken is a definite health food. It is low in fat and most people enjoy the flavor. Deep fried chicken might not be as healthy as chicken baked in tomato sauce or grilled chicken salad for example but the great thing about chicken is that it is versatile and you can vary your chicken recipes because there are so many to choose from there is almost an endless supply. Chicken is also inexpensive and easy to cook once you know how.

Easy Chicken Dishes to Start With

If you have not done a lot of cooking or you are unfamiliar with chicken, you can begin with an easy boneless chicken dish if you like. These recipes tend to be quite simple. You can slice some chicken breast and vegetables and stir-fry them. Pour over some sauce; warm it through and you have a great meal. You can make a mouthwatering Asian stir fry by frying chicken slices and vegetables. Add some soy sauce and sesame oil and you have made a wonderful dinner. You can also add raisins, nuts, and a pinch of chili powder or anything else you think will complement the dish.

You can make an Asian style stir fry by using boneless chicken slices, vegetables sliced thinly on the diagonal and adding some soy sauce and sesame oil at the last minute. Baked chicken recipes are also simple to put together and you can brown a boneless, skinless chicken breast, pour over some sauce or even a can of soup, and bake it in the oven. Poached chicken recipes and grilled chicken recipes are also easy unless you are making a complicated sauce or marinade. As long as you make sure your chicken cooks for the right amount of time, it should come out fine.

Undercooked chicken, which is pink inside, is a health risk and overcooked chicken is dry and stringy. The best way to check is to cut into the chicken and see if the juices run clear and if the meat is white all the way through. If it is, your chicken is done.

As you become more comfortable with cooking chicken, you can experiment with other chicken dishes. The baked chicken recipes you were once new to will seem simple and you can adapt these yourself, trying different vegetables and herbs for another flavor.

You can also try your hand at making a roast chicken dinner with all the trimmings when you have had some experience with easy chicken recipes.
