Looking In To an Electronics Career

by Brian Engle

The prospect of working in the electronics industry is appealing to many. The industry is occupationally safe and many individuals find the work to be very interesting. There are tons of specialties within the electronics industry, and finding the right one takes time and research.

To enter any professional career, an adequate supply of educational knowledge is required. Certain professions, such as a general electrician, can be attained with a high school and trade school education. Despite this, electricians can make a very good living, especially if they have their own business.

Most electronics careers require an extensive college education. Although not seemingly related, a good background in English or language is necessary for electronics due to the communications involved in the field. Science-wise, courses will focus on the physical arrangement of circuits and the procedures for building and manipulating them.

By the end of college, one should have received an Associate or Bachelor’s degree. To become an advanced electrical engineer, one needs to go further and work for a Masters or Doctorate degree. One will obviously make more money with additional education, and also have more opportunity and flexibility.

An interesting electronics career is the general engineer. This job involves manufacturing and designing electronic parts and components. There can be a research component to it, so instead of making standard parts, one would work on future ones.

A basic electronics assembler requires no more than a high school education, as their primary role is to simply assemble products. They will be trained on the job about what product they are manufacturing, and require no prior, industry-specific knowledge.

To become an electronics technician, one must be proficient in repairing different kinds of electrical systems. This ranges from small appliances to supercomputers. More education is required, but salaries can go as high as seventy thousand dollars, and this will grow in the future.

It is hard to look in any one direction and not see something electronic, unless you are looking at the sky (but even then, there are often airplanes). With the pervasiveness of electronics in our society, it’s no surprise that the electronics industry is one of the safest career choices around.

Choose Your Electric Guitar Amplifier From One Of Three Types

by Matt Rushton

There are more great electric guitar amplifiers on the market than ever before. So how do you know which guitar amplifier is right for you? To determine that, you need to decide what type of music you’re going to play.

There are amplifiers made for pretty much every type of music there is. There are amps more suited for Jazz, some that excel at Rock-N-Roll and some that are simply excellent at country music. Once you’ve decided what genre of music you’re going to be playing it’s time to consider the three main types of guitar amplifier construction.

Currently there are 3 main types of guitar amplifier on the market. There is the classic and eternally popular tube amplifier. There is the rugged and reliable solid-state amplifier which has no tubes. The latest and greatest amplifiers are digital modeling amplifiers which can sound like many different amplifiers.

The tube amplifier is the first type of amplifier used with the electric guitar. Tube amps are very warm sounding and give your guitar a compressed, tight feel. Tube amps work best in music that needs some light distortion such as Blues or Rock-N-Roll. Tube amps do require more maintenance than the other amplifier types.

Solid state amplifiers have no tubes and traditionally have had a cleaner, some would say colder, sound. A solid-state amplifier is very rugged and requires minimal maintenance to keep it playing well. They sound great for country music as well as some jazz and high-gain distortion.

The third type of modern guitar amplifier is the digital modeling amps. They are built to sound like other amplifiers and they include a mixture of solid state and tube amplifier sounds. The beauty of digital modeling amplifiers is their ability to go from a clean country music sound to a classic rock distortion at the push of a button.

One of the very best modeling type amplifiers is the Fender Cyber-Twin SE amplifier. It is really a hybrid amplifier in the sense that it incorporates a unique type of modeling with a full analog tube amplifier. You can get many tones from the Fender Cyber-Twin SE and I highly recommend this amplifier.

No matter what music type you play there will be an amplifier that’s best suited for you. If you’re playing Jazz, Blues or Rock-N-Roll then go with a tube amp. If you’re playing Country or modern Heavy Metal, then stick with Solid State. If you will be playing a lot of different styles of music then your best bet will be a digital modeling amplifier.

XLR Revealed and the Future of Pro Audio Plugs

by Jonas D Weiser

The XLR connector is commonly used in professional audio and video applications. The plug itself is an electrical connector by design. Similar in usages to the more familiar RCA connector, which is commonly used with home audio and video electronics, the XLR connector is different in a couple of important ways.

Originally designed and manufactured by James h. the connector was first called the “Cannon X,” and after the addition of a latch the “Cannon XL” and finally the “XLR” after having a rubber compound added to the connectors.

The most common is the 3-pin XLR3, used almost universally as a balanced audio connector for high quality microphones and connections between equipment. Other configurations are also widely used including the 4-pin XLR4, for Clear-Com and Telex intercom headsets and DC power connection for film and video cameras. XLR5 is the standard for DMX512 digital lighting control as well as dual element microphones and dual channel intercom headsets. XLR6 is the standard connection for dual channel intercom belt-packs.

There are several now obsolete configurations with additonal pins including the XLR-LNE mains power connector, which was identified by its red insulation and shrouded pins, and has now been replace by the Neutrik PowerCon connector. Until recently, XLR3 plugs were also widely used with 2-conductor loudspeaker cables, with either pin 2 or 3 as live (varies depending on the manufacturer) and pin 1 as the ground . Ultimately, this application turned out to be potentially harmful to equipment and the XLR has been replaced by the Neutrik Speakon connector.

Female XLR connectors are designed to first connect the ground pin before the other pins make contact as the male XLR connector is inserted. Because the ground connection is made first, before the signal lines make contact, XLR connectors can be inserted and removed without interference from external signals, a typical problem with RCA connections. There is some discrepancy between various manufacturers between swapping pin 2 (normal input) and pin 3 (inverting input), but this reflects nothing more than their own pre-existing standards before any standards existed. Pin 1 is exclusivley the earthly return or ground pin, and often soldered to the internal shell or case.

Lastly, the XLRM male plug is used for output and the XLRF connector is used for input. So, vocal microphones for example will have the XLRM connector. Signal cables will have XLRM at one end and an XLRF connector at the other. Mixers and other multi-track recording equipment components will have XLRF inputs, and XLRM returns to stage, or out to other components.

XLR connectors are the standard in the professional audio and recording industry. “Balanced” XLR cables help reduce noise and interference, especially over long spans . Quality in XLR cables varies greatly depending on the manufacturer, but for professional use please check out Canare, Mogami and Neutrik.

In the last few years, USB microphones that have the ability to connect directly to a PC or MAC have gained popularity. USB microphones are becoming increasingly popular as studio microphones, while live stage mics continue to use the standard XLR connectors.

Most Affordable US Prepaid Mobile Options

by Floyd Smithfield

Prepaid mobile, or pay as you go plans, are usually packaged according to different types of user behaviour, so to save money it’s important to choose a specific plan, depending for instance on if you text a lot or if you call during peak times Here are some tips on choosing the best prepaid mobile phone plans in the US.

Most prepaid mobile companies offer plans where you charge the account associated with your cell phone number with a certain sum, such as $20 or $100, and then use it to pay for services such as calls, sending texts, listening to voicemail, and so on.

One important thing to watch is the duration of your credit. If you don’t top up your credit regularly, the credit will expire. The time this can take is variable, from as short as a single month to up to a year, and it’s one of the things that you should watch put for, especially if you don’t use your prepaid mobile a lot.

If you have no credit on your phone, you will still be able to receive calls, but after a time that can vary between four months and a year the line will expire and you will lose your number. In this case, you are faced with the option of paying to reactivate the line, or going through the hassle of getting another prepaid mobile phone number.

Another important thing to check is area coverage. Make sure that the carrier of your choice has a good reception in the area where you live, and also that you can use the phone in any out of state areas that you visit often, such as favourite vacation hangouts or where family members live.

Right now Virgin is probably one of the best prepaid mobile operators in the US, with a very good level of customer service and cheap pay as you go plans to boot. For 20$ you can get calls for only 0.10 cents a minute, which is very convenient. There is a credit rollover facility, but otherwise your unused credit will only last one month.

T-Mobile is one of the few operators offering nice handsets together with prepaid mobile contracts, so if you would like a new multimedia phone rather than a basic device, this is the best carrier. If you top your pay as you go credit up in chunks of 100$, they will last a whole year.

TracFone is renowned for the good call quality on its network, and for relatively decent pricing, at 20 cents a minute for prepaid mobile calls. As there is no difference between recharging your prepaid mobile account with big or small amounts, this carrier is good if you want to top up small amounts.

MetroPCS’s prepaid mobile pricing is quite good, especially if your calls are mostly in-state. It is to be avoided, though, if you are often in states other than your home state, or abroad. This mobile phone operator is currently available in 33 states, including several large

There is also Cingular plan that is great if you don’t plan to use your prepaid mobile every day. Calls cost 10 cents a minute, plus a dollar for every day that you will use the phone to make calls. It’s good offer for occasional prepaid mobile phone users.

Canon SD1100IS Digital Camera Review

by Dave Alberts

I’ve been using a Canon Powershot I2 IS for the full 3 years now. Very good digital camera with a great 12X zoom. However, I wanted a digital camera to carry in my pocket. So many times I just didn’t feel like dragging a big camera with me to parties or events. This camera fills the bill. I now carry it everywhere.

The photos it creates are stunning. The 8 megapixels and 3X zoom produces a picture that you can crop to the point that you get almost the same image as you would have with the 5 megapixels 12X zoom lens. The film feature is great too, even greater than the I2 IS.

The camera feels great in your hand with a good, superior feeling. If you have used Canon cameras before the menus are very natural. I would not have purchased this camera (or any camera for that matter) if it did not have the Image Stabilization feature. This is particularly a must as you get older.

We did close-up photographs on flowers and even hair and eyelashes and it’s amazing what resolution we had with the camera and with such clearness. The camera is smooth to use and is small sleek and compact. I got the one in brown color and it looks special and sophisticated without searching too overly girly or masculine. Sound quality through the video recording was good and images were good and vivid and not at all pixelated.

By the way there is an advantage to the Brown color: If you get to use the optical view finder outside, the camera itself makes minimal glare for you eye to see more clearly through the small opening. The color also makes the LCD playback pop. And as a bonus, it truly makes the camera a luxury look, you have to see it in person to value the color.

I recently took it to a monthly card party and everyone got wild over it. So much so that one person sat right down at the computer and bought one!

If you want a sub-compact, little camera that makes great images, I highly recommend the Canon SD1100IS. Definitely a good buy and well worth the money.

Sony BRAVIA KDL-52W4100

by Dave Anderson

I purchased this TV in the late 2008 and have found it to be an a really great buy.

A couple reviews said that the TV has issues while the black shades are varying. I looked at this in the store with great details and have used it for a month and I have’t noticed that at all. This is a extremely sharp TV with superior colors and deep black tones. This LCD TV is a lot better than the previous TV W model.

Here is why you should buy this HDTV. It has a so clean image in digital broadcast and does a very good job in SD transmission much better than any other TVs I have used. For that it’s respossible a good technology from Sony named DSP which is basically noise reduction technology. Sony of course knows Blu-ray because afterall they manufactured it, they know whit skin tones should look like I mean they own a movie studio, the tv menus are truly simple to use, it has a built in TV guide and it has capability for future expansion.

Picture quality is pretty near Samsung in HD. I looked at both TVs side by side. Samsung has a slight edge on clarity in SD. Samsung is more shiny, Sony is a matte cover but darks on Samsung are pretty good because of the glossy screen. While testing with a Blu-ray disc,Sony has a bit more details. No fade from white to dark problems on Sony as some reviews has mentioned. Colors are pleasant and bright as Sony Bravia two engine is outstanding, maybe even better than XBR engine.I’ve found that the Z series may be better but there isn’t 52 inche models

Tv menus on Samsung televisons are created for experts with a lots of tweeks, but really it’s clouded for average user. If you doubt that, get the user manual for the Samsung LN52A650 and for Sony KDL524100 and check for yourself. If you are technical person, then buy LN52A650. If you don’t like to mess around, but get an superior image, take the Sony. Ths Sony TV is truly simple to use, but also it automatically finds digital channels and is like you get also a built in cable box.

The Sony TV may not have the Ethernet connector and built in news like the series 6 from Samsung, but it has the built in TV guide and option for upgrades. But, if you want internet in your TV, you are better off connecting an external device. The TV guide feature in this television is good and the Sony Bravia Sync is nice especially if you use a Sony DVD converter for 1080p. Picture in Picture technology is outstanding as well because it’s allowing you to view image from HDMI while viewing cable TV.

For me preferred thing on Sony KDL52W4100 is the on/off button on the top side as this is keeping children from turning off televison. Also a good thing is the remote on the Sony as it is really simple to operate.

In the end, if you want the a super clear picture, simple to use LCD TV with features that makes standard television watching fulfilling and simple. This Sony KDL52W4100 is excellent selection.

Samsung LN52A750 HDTV Customer Report

by Nick Kusina

Samsung LN46A750 has a tremendous picture quality right out of the box, but if you would like the best picture quality you should have it calibrated. There is nothing like this tv when it has been fine-tuned to your ambient.

Samsungs TOC or Touch Of (Red) Color, I’ve heard a lot of conversations about it. For me it is barely noticeable and gives it a nice look on the edges of this Samsung LN52A750.

I have been truly happy with this TV. It posses a lot of connectors and good quality. You should read the instructions with caution if you have any component connecters because just 1 set on the television has that function and it says composite on the back.

There are some minor gripes but it’s not something to worry about. The operating system is a bit delayed. When going through menus it may take a while to respond but I’m picky about that. Couple of the remote buttons like the jog wheel operate better for a person who uses it slower and presses more firmly.

Buttons for channels and volume squeak slighty but not in an unpleasant way. The other negative thing of the remote is it is not universal. I don’t like that a TV in this price range doesn’t come with one.

The image quality of HD sources are beautiful with right and properly saturated colors. Not too saturated and over processed like Sony televisons. There are times when the upscaling of lower quality signals shows something to be wanted. Sometimes when a person’s face can seem a bit granulated or blocky. This can be well fixed by using a HD source. With HD sources this set is perfectly gorgeous.

Combine it with Blu ray player or other HD source and you will be in paradise. I just love it. Just know that this TV, like other high contrast sets, uses a semi glossy screen which can reflect so be careful of your light sources nearby. It shines about as much as a standard flat screen tube TV with standard glass, maybe a bit less.

Last the audio is decent. I have never been a fan of the built in audio on any TV but for those who don’t worry about that the sound is just fine. One thing I have discovered though is that the television processes image quicker than my own amplifier processes sound. It happens that the TV can go before of my surround sound system and the sounds don’t align. This is easily resolved by pausing the picture and start it again. It happens rarely and usually only when I start or when I’m fast forwarding a video.

Conclusion is that this is a outstanding television, and probably the best HDTV at this price point, money well spent and will satisfy absolutely everyone.

If you buy Samsung’s products you can’t never go wrong. And also you certainly can’t go wrong in choosing this unique Samsung LN52A750. We hope that we assisted someone to make the good selection. I can promise to you that I can secure you that you will like this TV, just as much as I do.

Sony BRAVIA KDL-46W4100

by Marc Bidderman

The Sony KDL46W4100 is an fascinating and completely featured LCD TV. We were quite impressed by its performance, with very dark blacks, precise white colors and a shiny display. This TV has also some negative sides, because the color reproduction is a little off and the viewing angle are not really good.

If you look often some type of fast moving action on your TV, then this HDTV television has got a plenty of things to offer you. The Sony KDL46W4100 performed good in our motion tests. We experienced smooth movement with movies that contained lots of movement, and the televison had no problem serving a good image.

This Sony TV supports a full HD or real HD picture. The choice of input and output ports is great, having a four HDMI connectors. Regrettably it does lack a USB connector or some card reader.

This TV set also offers TruSurround and that is a patented SRS technology that enables running 5.1 channel content over two speaker units. This Sony delivers a excellent virtual surround sound with any two speaker units, including internal TV speaker units and also headphones. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels. This tv set also has three sound enhancement technologies to produce an awesome sound. Outstanding sound with the solid picture quality truly makes this Sony Bravia TV a great one.

The Sony Bravia KDL46W4100 executed good in our tests of blacks and whites. Black colors were precise deep, particularly for an LCD TV of this price tag. White colors and greys were brilliant and precise. This television really has superior colors, we have seen consistent white colors and a clear, accurate representation of the primary colors that are used to make all colors on the screen. We were happy with color precision, but we have noticed a really small problem with the TV’s color gamut, which means colors may not always be precisely they should.

Maybe the largest problem with the Sony Bravia KDL-46W4100 is a viewing angle. Looking from aside we found that the contrast ratio was decreasing. Contrast ratio is the difference in reproducing the black and light colors. This tv set doesn’t have a very good viewing angle, even for an LCD TV, which usually don’t perform as well in this area as Plasma TVs.

The remote control of this TV is nice, comfortable to hold and well laid out with the exception that the controls for direction are at the different ends of the remote from the channel pushes. The menu on the television is like of that used in the Playstation 3, and will require some time to get used to it.

Energy consumption is around average. You can use this LCD TV without worrying you will get a large bill for electrics.

This Sony KDL46W4100 is a very great TV, with a full feature set and brilliant performance on nearly all fields. The viewing angle matter will be serious for pickier ones. If you need a TV that will sit in a place where people will be looking at it from all angles you may want to go with a Plasma. If this isn’t an issue for you, then you you are going to get your money’s worth with the Sony KDL46W4100.

Dancers dressed in tutus or warm-up leggings and leotards stretching at a ballet barre may seem like something of a modern day interpretation of a Degas painting, but the importance of barre work in ballet can’t be emphasized enough.
