Which Movies really Stand Out Amongst All the Others.

by Jeremy Newton

The backlash from disappointed people after the nominations of the 2009 Annual Academy awards were announced had been phenomenal. All this has been targeted at the fact that The Dark Knight has only been nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

The Dark Knight has been nominated and received many awards recently, including The Golden Globes and The Grammys. It has even received nominations from the producers, Writers and Cinematographers Guild this month. So why has been ignored by the Academy?

To top all this off, Chris Nolan even got passed over in the Best Director category. Even if Heath Ledger receives an Best Supporting Actor award, There is no way The Dark Knight will be taking home a Best Picture or a Best Director trophy come February 22nd. In the fur lore of all this hype, many people are questioning whether The Dark Knight deserves all the attention it has been receiving since long before it?s premiere last summer.

A movie can receive praise from the public that can elevate it to the status of a great movie, but when it gets to the point that people are worshipping a movie and describing it as the best movie they have ever seen, then it becomes something else. Some say that The Dark Knight has got much more than attention than it deserves

The Dark Knight has broken record after record in box office receipts. It has also shown an amazing run at the box office as the awards season continues. The very first weekend the hyperbole emanating over the internet about how fantastically brilliant the movie is was intensely nauseating. It got so bad at one point that a lot of people were calling it the greatest film of all time. Certainly the greatest crime drama of all time and a yardstick that all other super hero movies would be measured against from now on.

The movie is not just an entertaining, albeit dark, story presented with high production value and as much gritty realism as a comic-book movie can sustain. It is also part of the ongoing cultural production and reproduction of the structural imperatives of the capitalist system. A system that upon monopolizing finance capital, subjecting the power of the state to capital, the creation of criminal classes out of any minority group, the reproduction of internal racial inequality on an international level, and the legitimation of violence in keeping the lower classes divided, subservient, and ‘irrational.’

The Dark Knight cashes in on the notion of capitalist dominance and the legitimate militarization of our society against these so-called insane terrorists. It comments on the society that we live in today and the problem with terrorism. It is any wonder that this movie has been such the box office draw that it has been?

The next instalment in the Batman franchise is now on everyone?s thoughts. Considering it?s Worldwide take at the box office, a sequel is inevitable.

2001 has been mentioned as a possible release date for the next movie. The Dark Knight?s executive producer has spoken about the possibility of this release and indicates that it is becoming a reality.
