How Not To Worry

by Matt Hellstrom

I thought worry was a natural part of life, it was in mine. However, lately I have been able to notice this pattern of faulty thinking, and in recognizing it I have been experiencing freedom from worry. And I am growing stronger because of it.

People who have known me most of my life can attest to my worrier status. I am the poster child for the Worriers Club, maybe even president. I don’t know if I was born with this or learned it, but my mom too struggles with worrying. That may be where it came from, I don’t know. One thing I do know is that I worry over almost everything and I too know that my worrying has never changed a thing!

First, I have come to the startling realization that all of my worrying has not amounted to a hill of beans. Not one thing has changed for the better or at all for that matter. One of my chief worries was my kids going to and from school. I did my best to let them know the rules of safety-no stranger interactions, don’t walk alone. I felt they were well prepared.

But when all is said and done, they could leave the house, turn the corner and get hit by a car, fall and hit their head, lose their way and the list goes on. There was nothing I could do to stop it and my worrying couldn’t stop it either.

Fortunately, so far, none of those things have happened. In fact, nothing at all has happened while my kids have walked to school. And I have 5 of them, with the oldest being a sophomore in high school. That’s a lot of uneventful walking to school episodes. This leads me to my second point.

I tend to worry about things that never will happen anyway. So I am looking at things differently. Meaning I decide what are the odds that this could really happen and if it is high then I give it some credence and do still worry. Once when one of my boys had a chance to get an airplane ride for memorizing bible verses in Sunday school, I got to try this theory. The teacher of Sunday School was also the pilot and he knew how to fly that plane. Yes it was dangerous but I determined that the odds of crashing were very low, so I only worried a little bit. (I did mention that I am a recovering worrier, right?)

Finally, I do realize that worrying can add problems. I have worked for myself for the last 20 years. This in and of itself can cause worries in riding the income roller coaster. And as we all have found out recently, there are no guarantees and even less so being a small business owner. So money is a big worry - so much so that I can spend hours fretting over the checkbook, checking and rechecking my Quickbooks and wasting time where I could actually be working so as to bring in money. This will actually make my worries come true and be overwhelming in the process. Not good or needed.

My wife and I have found a solution to this income worrying issue. She now pays the bills as she doesn’t seem to be as big of a worrier. And it also gives me back the time I was worrying to work so we can bring in the money.

If you want to know how not to worry, try to readjust your thinking in the 3 ways I’ve outlined above. And remember what the Bible says: “Do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Anxiety Attack Symptoms - Why Do We Suffer With Them

by Kerris Samson

Everyone will have experienced anxiety attack symptoms to some degree at some stage of their lives. The most common thing that will produce anxiety attack symptoms and which people relate to is when having to speak in public. Think about the last time you yourself had to make a presentation or a speech to a group of others. Even now just thinking about it, probably starts to make you feel a little anxious.

Are you now starting to remember just how you felt at that time. You probably felt nauseous and felt that your legs would not be able to hold you up, also you found yourself beginning to sweat. You may even felt as if you had forgotten what it is you were going to say and all you wanted to do was run away and hide. This is what doctors and other health professionals would classify as a normal everyday kind of anxiety attack.

But for some people the symptoms they suffer from can be somewhat extremely especially when they are faced with something they specifically dislike. For some it may be when they are required to speak in public, for others it can be seeing a spider, whilst for others it may be because they are required to climb a ladder. For these people their particular attack will have been triggered by something specific.

Some people who suffer from these symptoms find that they can be extremely intense and for others the attacks begin to occur more frequently. Although we all feel some form of anxiety at some stage during our lives these people will show more outward signs, rather than just feeling worried. They may find that they begin to shake uncontrollably as well as start to cry for no apparent reason.

For example a person who has a particularly aversion to spiders, may find that their symptoms can be triggered just by seeing a picture of a spider. It does not matter whether the animal is in a book, magazine or on the TV they will start to experience the symptoms of an attack. Some people even find that just hearing others talking about spiders can trigger an attack as well.

There is also another level of anxiety where the number of things that cause their anxiety attack symptoms will increase and the sufferers feels as if they are just spinning out of control. A person who is afraid of speaking in public may find that they have developed such symptoms not just about that, but they may start to find making business phone calls, speaking up during small meetings or having to interact with their co-workers can cause the symptoms to appear. This could actually result in the person finding it difficult to cope with their career. People who do suffer from these intense and increased levels of anxiety will have found that several things seem to trigger the symptoms and which they have no control over. Often one trigger for the symptoms can lead to other triggers. For example a businessperson who has anxiety-related problems at work, may well develop the same symptoms when driving to work. This can lead them to trying to avoid driving to work. As the symptoms become worse it may result in them actually trying to avoid any kind of social contact. Once this snowballing effect starts, then a person may find that their problems relating to anxiety become much worse.

However, luckily for these people there is hope and ways in which these problems can be treated. By going to see a doctor or a counselor they can get help to treat the anxiety attack symptoms that they are having. It is important to remember that this is not a new problem and so there is plenty of help and advice available, so no longer do sufferers have to cope with their problems alone.

3 Signs Of Panic Attacks In Children

by Adrian King

We want our children to be happy, joyful, and energetic. We want them to live fulfilling and productive lives. What more could we ask for as parents? However, bringing up our children in the world of today subjects them to many pressures to act and think in certain ways, all of which might not be too realistic. This can often cause unhappiness and stress in a child. If you suspect this to be the case, then the 3 signs of panic attacks in children outlined here might be something valuable to look at.

To the shock of many people, panic attacks in children can be a rather common occurrence. Not only are our children dealing with the same kinds of pressures and problems, albeit it in different situations than adults, they most certainly lack the emotional maturity necessary to cope with them. If the child is trying to avoid school, social situations, or isolates themselves, then perhaps they have a withdrawal problem. This is often the first sign of panic attacks in children.

Does your child laugh and play around often? Are they active and energetic? Being sad, stressed and down is the second of these signs. It is very important to pay attention to their emotional states, as well as getting them to express how they feel. Often, your child will open up, as it will be a big sigh of relief for them to hear from you that what they’re feeling is actually quite normal, and is experienced by many. It is a very comforting thing for them to know that they are not alone. Talking about this and teaching them how to deal with these problems is a very important part of helping your child through this hard time in their life.

If they seem easily hurt or upset when told that they did something wrong, this may be an example of panic attacks in children. For example, if they do their homework and get a math question wrong, do they respond irrationally when you tell them its wrong. Many times in anger or instant sadness. This is another sign of anxiety as many people who suffer from this are perfectionists and have trouble dealing with being wrong.

Seeking treatment for your child is definitely a good move if you can recognize any of these symptoms within them. To help alleviate symptoms, medicines and remedies are available, however, it they should be used in addition to a treatment designed to remove the cause of the problem at its core.

About Anxiety Attacks

by James Berdhof

Anxiety or panic attacks are sudden periods of intense anxiety, fear and discomfort. While these attacks might seem to happen for no reason, theyre actually the bodys response to what it perceives as the need for “fight or flight”.

The attacks usually last about ten minutes, but can be as short as one minute. In severe cases, these attacks can happen in cycles. These cycles may last for extended periods. These cycles can cause “anticipation” anxiety between episodes.

Physical symptoms of anxiety attacks generally include shortness of breath, heart palpitations and sweating. Tingling and numbness in the extremities, dizziness, lightheadedness, headaches and nausea are also commonly experienced. These may appear to be random, but theyre actually the result of the bodys preparations for protection.

The anxiety attack is brought on by a sudden onset of fear. In response, the body releases adrenaline followed by increases in the heart and breathing rate and production of sweat (to regulate body temperature).

These actions prepare the body for the physical activities of fighting or escaping. Because the anticipated strenuous activity rarely follows the panic attack, these reactions result in physical discomfort.

The increased heart rate is felt as heart palpitations. Rapid breathing (hyperventilation) results in a drop in carbon dioxide levels in the lungs and blood.

This leads to the tingling, numbness, dizziness and lightheadedness. The adrenaline causes a narrowing of the blood vessels which results in less blood flow to the head. This also contributes to the lightheadedness and headaches.

Stress: How To Overcome It With Right Treatments

by Yanda Atmaja

Stress is only another form of anxiety. Stress and its related problems are some of the most common mental issues that the world deals with today. Some forms of stress related disorders can actually be dangerous to someone’s health and that is why the management of stress is such an important skill. There are many different types of stress management skills and finding the one that is right for you can be key in dealing with your nervous tension.

There are a lot of different kinds of stress and similar disorders. Some forms of stress are not as serious, but some can cause health risks. Too much stress can lead to other issues, such as cardiovascular and digestive problems, eating disorders and sleep disorders. Large amounts of stress cause a person to constantly think about the pressure that they are under, which in turn never allows them to relax. This eventually becomes harmful to the body, as it is in a constant state of agitation. Stress is something that affects nearly everyone at some time or another and there are many causes, such as worries about jobs, finances, family and other things. When left untreated, stress can build to such a point that it has a adverse influence on entire families. The most important thing to remember about stress is that it is necessary to deal with it every day so that it does not build into a monster of an issue.

Stress can be treated in many ways. While the initial treatment is to learn stress management skills, in many cases it is not enough to see a noticeable change in stress levels. Many health experts believe that high levels can lead to other issues, such as depression and anxiety disorders. Antidepressants are sometimes prescribed for stress and its related cousins. If you suspect that someone you know is suffering from too much stress, or you feel that you are under too much stress, then it might be a good idea to read health guides to properly diagnose what you or your loved ones might be going through.

The best way to live a stress free life is to learn to let things go. Of course, this can often be extremely hard to do, which is why stress management is a very popular form of therapy. If a stress problem is suspected, then be sure to contact a health professional for an expert diagnosis.

Stress and related disorders can sometimes be the trigger to much more serious health issues. Stress management can help avoid these issues, but not everyone knows how to do this. Sometimes doctors will give out antidepressants to persons under a great deal of stress. Since this is something that strikes everyone, treatment is very important. Health professionals are the best resource for advice and guidance.

Anxiety Disorders

by James Berdhof

These debilitating episodes are more likely to occur during times of high stress.

Its also common for symptoms of clinical depression to be present in people with anxiety disorders.

Treatment includes behavioral therapy, lifestyle changes and medications. Sometimes a combination of all three is needed. Occasionally, a change in lifestyle is all that is needed.

Mainstream treatment generally consists of a combination of prescription medications and referral to a cognitive behavioral therapist. This treatment method is often met with controversy.

Some studies show this combination is more effective than either method alone, while other studies have shown that the majority of patients gain more benefits from the medications and very little from the behavioral treatments.

The best treatment may depend on the genetics of the individual sufferer as well as environmental factors. Working closely with a counselor, psychiatrist or therapist will aid in determining the best treatment methods.

3 Tips For Controlling Anxiety

by Adrian King

There are many of us who regularly experience anxiety. This effects our lives in many different ways. Our relationships suffer, our work life suffers, our social life suffers, and we personally suffer emotionally, mentally, and physically. Here are 3 tips for controlling anxiety.

The first tip for controlling anxiety is to recognize our own personal obsessive negativity. If you are the type of person who constantly sees the bad in life and things, you are going to have to deal with more stress on a daily basis. This stress leads to more constant and frequent anxiety.

Stopping overly striving for perfection is the second tip. Many that feel the urge to have everything placed in a very specific fashion, and have everything else exactly in the way they think it should be, which once again ups the levels of stress they have to feel. It is fine to not have everything completely perfect every single time. You’ll find yourself enjoying things a lot more when you’re able to not obsess over every tiny detail.

The third tip is being able to end over analyzing things so obsessively. A lot of the time, copious amounts of stress and anxiety is caused as a direct result of concentrating on things that don’t require such a level of time and energy. For example, perhaps someone may mention something in passing, and we will over analyze what we think they meant, only to later find out they had intended to convey something entirely different.

Learning to ease up a little bit more as well as cultivating different abilities and skills can greatly help with controlling anxiety. Using these tips as described daily can help us to achieve a more carefree life. A great number of our worries exist because of our inability to recognize what their cause is, how to go about fixing them, and how to improve the end result of those causes.

Fight or Flight, Faith or Fear

by AnnaMaria Elings

Did you know that a person can have fear of almost any imaginable thing there is. Statistics state that there are over 4,000 types of fear known to man.

We were fashioned with the fight or flight ability. As we’re subjected to a fearful state of affairs or even idea, our body automatically goes into a warning signal stage. Whenever the stressor isn’t resolved our body than proceeds into a resistance phase. In this phase, semi-permanent impacts of fear manifest into physical symptoms.

The hypothalamus, which maintains function of the body’s status quo, will be influenced by the stress and anxiety, taking place in the mind concerning any fear. Eventually, the body will be unable to repair itself, going into an exhaustion mode. God has designed our bodies to repair and restore itself. Yet, when we are not taking every thought captive putting us into a constant state of fight or flight our bodies cannot repair.

What are you hearing when your body goes into an anxiety attack? Are you having trouble taking your thoughts captive and controlling where your mind goes? For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he. Proverbs 23:7 Where does your mind wander to? To frightening and worrisome things in the future? God stated in the Bible, that He did not give us a spirit of fear; but of power, and love and a sound mind. 2nd Timothy 1:7 Listen, if we have control of our thoughts than we have the power to cast down every imagination behind the spirit of fear and how it can affect our physical bodies.

The Bible tells us approximately 365 times to “fear not”. Pretty amazing that God addresses this subject so much. He also tells us that faith and fear are equal. What do fear and faith have in common? Both project into the future and demand to be fulfilled. Fear is filled with negativity and represents your enemy, the devil. Faith is fulfilled by the positive peace of God.

The holistic approach purportedly cares for the whole patient, but how intimately do they understand mans spirit and soul from Gods standpoint? Your foe, the devil, however, realizes our incomparable creation rather well. He has made a survey of Gods creation for a very long time. He recognizes how God created your mind/body/soul connection. The devil knows that we are only maintained in wellness and sanity to the level that we reflect the nature of the living God. Your foe recognizes that by holding captive our thinking, he can command your biology, also.

Fear focuses on the world and is an accuser, reminding you of past failures and that God is unworthy. It separates us from God and torments us, drives us, and is contagious. Think about how true this is? When you embrace fear, it is generally a driving force pushing us into negative thought territory, causing our body to go into flight or fight.

Faith is all about “whom we will believe”, which is God. Faith is about trust and hope that God will take care of your future. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of which is not yet seen.” Hebrews 11:1 If you have faith you believe before you see it in the physical. Faith gently leads us, unlike when fear drives us. God honors and respects those of you who believe and trust in Him. Faith or fear are a decision you can choose. Practice taking every thought in your mind captive and walking out in faith that God is the one in control of your future.

A Natural Anxiety Remedy - Is It The Right Choice vs. Prescription Medication?

by Bethany Jordin

When you are in a place where anxiety is a large part of your life and you find that it drastically reduces your ability to function, you know that something needs to be done. However, it can be very hard not to feel as though you are victim of circumstance when it seems as though anxiety attacks can strike at any time. It is too easy to slide into despair and to start wondering if you are ever going to get better. When you are looking for new options to try, you’ll discover that a natural anxiety remedy might be precisely what you need to look at. Take some time to consider what a natural cure can do for you, and don’t miss out on the opportunities that you have.

Why should you consider a natural anxiety remedy? In the first place, you will find that they are oftentimes much less expensive than working with prescription medication. Prescription medication is often extremely pricey, and if you are not insured or if your insurance does not cover the treatment that you have in mind, it can be impossible to get the treatment that you need. If cost is a deciding factor, and given the way the economy is going, it needs to be, you will find that checking out a natural anxiety remedy is something that you are going to need to consider.

Another area where a natural anxiety remedy can be a better choice than a prescription medication is when you are looking at side effects. Have you ever taken a medication that is simply horrible when it comes to the side effects that you might get? This is the issue with prescription medications. In many cases, they are very powerful and when they get into your system, there is a shockwave. You’ll find that you are getting a number of side effects, some of which you can live with, and some of which you simply cannot! You’ll find that if you can get a natural anxiety remedy that is going to be much better for you, at the end of the day you are going to be much further ahead.

Finally, look at all of the natural remedies out there for you to choose from. Consider all the plants and herbs that you can look at, and you’ll see why it is possible to find one that really suits you. Before you start on any supplement and before you look into what your options are going to be, always make sure that you consult with a doctor first. By taking a look at all of your options and by making sure that you have good information on them, you will be able to save yourself a lot of grief when it comes to the finding out a treatment that will give you the effects that you are after.

All that being said, what are some basic remedies that you can look to?

St. John’s Wort - St. John’s wort has been considered a powerful herb ever since the ancient times, and though the ancients didn’t know why, we certainly do. This plant is a very powerful herbal antidepressant, and you’ll find that it has effects that are very similar to tricyclic antidepressant and to SSRI antidepressants like Paxil and Zoloft. Make sure that you consider how strong it is, and the fact that it can treat depression and mood disorders as well as anxiety. It tends to have much milder side effects than any of the drugs listed above, though you do have to remember that you cannot take it if you are taking any prescription medications.

5-HTP - 5-HTP is also known as hydroxytryptophan and it is widely known as one of the most effective natural anxiety remedy options out there. It is used to treat insomnia and migraines on top of treating anxiety, and one of the best parts is that the side effects are known to be very minimal. Pregnant women should not take this supplement, and it is important to be aware that it can possibly bring on nausea and dizziness.

Passionflower - Not only is this tropical plant beautiful, it can also help you when it comes to calming down your anxiety. In many cases, researchers are still unsure as to how it can help us, but the results definite that it certainly does. It is generally believed that there are flavonoids and alkaloids in the plant that can help you regulate the neurotransmitters in your nervous system. This works to help you reduce your anxiety and to lower your blood pressure.

There are lots of choices when you go looking for a natural anxiety remedy, so always make sure that you know what is out there. This is something that can change your life for the better, so consider what it can do for you!

Some Natural Anxiety Cures Worth Trying

by Kerris Samson

For those who suffer from anxiety this can lead to their lives being severely effected. As well as many having to cope with high blood pressure, many more will find that they have problems sleeping and in some cases may suddenly start to gain weight. However, there are certain things that these people can do which will help them to cope and hopefully bring their anxiety under control through using only natural products. The vast majority of natural anxiety cures that are available are herbal based, but there are some others which use mineral or vitamin extracts instead.

Because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not regulate either the sale, packaging or the effectiveness of these remedies you need to be careful what you buy. But although the FDA does not regulate the clinical trials which have been carried out on herbal remedies, you will still be able to find ones which have been tested and then proven to the right natural cure for dealing with anxiety.

Valerian root is an excellent option for the relief of anxiety. As a muscle relaxer, Valerian root also works well against sleep disorders like insomnia. Valerian is most widely available as a tincture or a capsule. When taken in 50 to 500 milligram doses, Valerian can have a very relaxing effect, which can drastically lower stress levels.

Although there are some medications available today for treating anxiety it could take a person several days to feel any positive effects from them. However, people who have chosen to take Valerian Root have found that the effect it has had on them is almost immediate. Generally, though those who have used this herbal remedy have found that it takes effect around 30 minutes to one hour after they have taken it.

It is important that before you purchase any hebal remedy for treating your anxiety you read the products label very carefully. You need to especially place close attention to what ingredients have been used in it. If you can look for those that include passion fruit flower extract in them. Contained within this extract is a chemical known as vitexin and this contains properties that can help to relieve tension. But as well as this property the vitexin also has anti-inflammatory and anti-histamic properties.

The best natural anxiety cures actually are widely available in most metropolitan areas. With the growing dominance of the internet, even someone who doesn’t live in the city can order what they need from a myriad of websites.

Before setting up your home laboratory and cooking your own proprietary blends, consult a doctor. Some herbal remedies have ingredients that not everyone can digest. If you are unable to digest all the ingredients of Valerian, it may cause night terrors, and abdominal pain.

Don’t forget to check with a doctor if you don’t know about the safety of each of these methods. There is always a risk of interaction with drugs you currently take. Always remember to read the ingredients on the bottle to find out how much of each acting agent is present, as the amount of each ingredient can lead to questionable efficacy.

Know your Ballet Barre Exercises

Dancers dressed in tutus or warm-up leggings and leotards stretching at a ballet barre may seem like something of a modern day interpretation of a Degas painting, but the importance of barre work in ballet can’t be emphasized enough. All ballet dancers, whether they want to go on to be prima ballerinas, or are the youngest novice still learning how to tie the ribbons on her ballet slippers, will learn that the barre will be the greatest tool to help a ballet dancer develop the strength, poise and balance that she (or he) will need to create the graceful movements synonymous with ballet dancing.
