Your New Home Espresso Bar - Setting Up Shop

by Kim R.

Are you getting ready to treat yourself to a home espresso machine? Here is a list of common accessories that will improve your home espresso brewing experience.

Let’s start with the espresso grinder and the espresso tamper. The most important accessory to your espresso machine is your coffee grinder. A poor grinder can actually burn your coffee prior to brewing so a good grinder can actually improve the taste of your coffee. The better quality grinders are burr grinders. Don’t skimp on your grinder.

The tamper is a pretty simple tool that is used to press down on the coffee grinds prior to brewing. If you have a new espresso machine, a tamper probably came with your machine and it probably sucks too. If you upgrade your tamper make sure it fits will and that it feels and looks good to you.

A steaming and frothing pitcher rounds out your arsenal of espresso making tools. Many espresso drinks call for steamed milk or frothed milk or both. For example a Cappuccino is made with roughly equal portions of espresso, steamed milk and frothed milk. A 12 oz. pitcher is appropriate for home use but you can also get them twice as large if needed.

Now we come to espresso and latte cups. There is a huge variety of designs and styles to choose from. One of my favorites is the simple espresso shot glass. These are made with special heat resistant glass and double walled construction to retain as much heat as possible. The other really cool avenue to explore with espresso cups are the porcelain designer cups. These are short production run cups with unique art from known designers (famous artists, architects, etc). These espresso cups can become very collectable once they are out of production.

You will also want to get sets of espresso spoon and latte spoons to go along with your cups. Espresso cups and spoons are geared toward drinks that are 1 to 2 ounces, while latte and cappuccino cups are usually 6 to 12 ounces in size.

Until you master a multitude of espresso drinks, you will want to have a coffee recipe book. These recipe books can contain hundreds of recipes for coffee beverages (wow!). Basic espresso drinks that you will want to master include the latte, the mocha and the cappuccino.

Flavors come next and there are LOTs to choose from. Although there are flavored powders (ex: chocolate, mocha, etc) most flavors are added as syrup. There are dozens of flavors of syrup and they range from the perennial favorite of chocolate to seasonal flavors such as pumpkin.

Actually your options for accessorizing your new espresso machine are nearly endless. Add new items when they make sense to you and you will enjoy brewing your own home made espresso drinks for a long time.

Making A Great Cup Of Coffee

by Corey Dell

I’m sure that you’ve had a good cup of coffee and bad cups of coffee but chances are you haven’t even had a great cup of coffee because you are just so used to just anything that you do not know the difference. When you finally have that great cup of coffee, you will be inspired.

A lot of people who are looking to create the best cup of coffee first look at the actual blend and brand that they are using. This may be a good thing to look at but really the first thing that you should analyze is the water that you are using to brew the coffee. Good clean water, even bottled, makes all the difference. After all, a cup of coffee is made up mostly of water.

If you do not want to use bottled water, there are good water filters available now that will make the water completely perfect for brewing coffee. The most important thing is that you have to have the water free of any minerals, impurities and other things that would affect the coffee. Also, the fresher the water is, the better the coffee.

The coffee maker that you choose should always be as clean as possible. Any remaining grounds and other things from previous uses will affect the taste negatively. A dirty machine will definitely ruin a good brew.

The next thing to determine is the coffee itself. Always buy the best coffee that you can afford in its whole bean form and keep them in an container or bag.

Using whole bean and grinding it yourself is better because the coffee oils in the bean are releases just before brewing. Pre-gound coffees have had a chance to sit in its ground state and the oils tend to dry up this way. If you must use preground, which I admit is more convenient, make sure it is stored in an air tight container as well. Whole coffee beans will also stay fresher a lot longer as long as they are stored properly. Never store coffee in a fridge or freezer.

When grinding the beans, only grind what you need for that time. Always ensure that you maintain and clean your coffee grinder as well.

Different types of coffee machines perform best with the specific sizes of grinds that they need. Make sure to adhere to instructions on coffee machines that you use and pay attention to what they say. This will make a big difference in the taste of your brew.

Should You Drink Coffee?

by Borgon Trocepticlon

A research-based survey revealed that the most popular stimulant which has become compulsory to rub off the sleep from the eyes in the morning and to activate the energy levels is coffee.

Coffee beans, kola nuts and tea leaves are the components from which caffeine is obtained. Chocolate factories and pharmaceutical companies use caffeine in their products. People start craving for caffeine as it is addictive.

Today, the world is facing caffeine addiction to a staggering percentage. Though if questioned and probed people will never admit their reliance on caffeine. Caffeine’s prevalence is common as it speeds up the heart rate of the body, increases the vigilance and also raises the blood sugar level.

Caffeine has multiple negative health effects. It is a diuretic which means that the body needs to urinate more frequently which ultimately reduces the water level of the body. Moreover, a person’s deep sleep is also reduced with caffeine intake. It creates a high level of dependence which means that without caffeine a person will show symptoms such as irritability, headache, exhaustion, low level of concentration and joint pain.

Pregnant women should keep away from caffeine as it can have a negative impact on the fetus. The unhealthy reaction to the caffeine can cause miscarriage by disrupting the placenta and eventually the fetus, although this is extremely rare. If taken during pregnancy, it increases the risk of low birth weight and severe labor pain.

Three to four cups of coffee daily increases the level of anxiety in a person and makes him more prone to panic disorders. Many people also experience insomnia due to over stimulation of the body because of caffeine. People working the night shift suffer from insomnia as they are unable to sleep in the day. Lack of sleep will cause dark circles in the eyes, nervousness and jittering.

People also acquire cardiac problems and diabetes because of the rise in the heart rate, blood pressure and blood sugar level. Moreover those suffering from gastric problems and stomach acidity should guard themselves and take caution with caffeine as it also causes stomach aches and increases the bowel movements. Bowel disorders are a very common side effect of caffeine.

Caffeine can trigger yearnings for food and thus result in obesity and weight gain. The disadvantages of caffeine seem limitless standing opposite to its advantages. Though coffee can revitalize the body, its effect remains only for four to six hours. Later the body hungers for the instantaneous power. This can induce dependence of caffeine. A healthy life can only be achieved if a person discontinues relying on caffeine for instant vivacity. Reducing caffeine from the daily diet should be accepted as a challenge.

Jamaican Blue Mountain

by gourmetcoffee2you

Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee is one of the worlds most expensive coffees.Part of the reason for this coffee’s expense are the strict regulations as to what coffee can be classified as Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

The beans must be grown in a specific area of jamaica to qualify for the ‘blue mountain’ label. The beans must be harvested from Saint Andrew, Portland, Saint Thomas, and Saint Mary on the eastern side of Jamaica, it must also be grown between three thousand and five thousand feet.

All coffees are graded, based on appearance, size, and permitted defects. In Blue Mountain Nos. 1, 2, and 3, not more than 2% of the beans may have defects that are significant. The difference in these three grades of Blue Mountain coffee comes in the size of the beans. In No. 1, for example, 96% of the beans have to have a screen size of 17/20. In No. 2, the size must be 16/17, and in No. 3, 15/16. Blue Mountain Peaberry requires that 96% of the beans have to be peaberry, and no more than 2% can have defects of significance. Blue Mountain Triage is a little different. It contains beans from the various classifications, and not more than 4% of the beans can have defects of significance.

Due to the strict restrictions, the coffee that carries the label Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee has earned it. Not only is the growing and harvesting of the beans highly regulated, but even the size and perfection of the individual beans is taken into consideration before the coffee is given the Blue Mountain label. This shows how unique Blue Mountain coffee is, and why its flavor is rated so highly all over the world. Its cultivation is highly regulated and monitored by the Coffee Industry Board of Jamaica. The care that is taken in its growth, harvest, and distribution have ensured that Blue Mountain coffee is of the highest quality, the best flavor, and among the best coffee in the world.

In addition to being brewed as coffee, Blue Mountain coffee beans are used as the base of flavor in Tia Maria liqueur. This liqueur is also only made in Jamaica, and is similar to coffee liqueurs such as Kahlua. This liqueur has only added to the prestige and desirability of the coffee.

For one of the best coffees in the world, the mild flavor of jamaican blue mountain rules supreme. The mild flavor and exceptional quality have helped make it the most desired coffee in the world. It’s considered the best for a reason.

Looking back, there were a lot of processes that contributed in the success of coffee in the market. We need to mention percolator, filter process, espresso maker, and plunger.

Percolator dominated the 1960s. In the case of coffee-brewing, the solvent is water, the soluble constituents are the chemical compounds that give coffee its taste, aroma and color, and the permeable substance is the coffee grounds. As known, there are two types of percolator. First type cycles the boiling brew through the grounds making use of gravity till needed required strength is attained while second type forces boiling water under pressure into a separate chamber through the grounds.

Filter Process

In the 1970s, the most dominant was the filter process. Compared to the percolator, this immensely ameliorated the savor of the resulting drink and was a more low-budget option. Few spoons of coffee grounds were arranged on filter paper and barely off the boil water slowly passed across them and by the paper, dropping into a glass jug under. Evolutions in this certain process enclosed prepared coffee and filter paper sachets in different forms, and adaptations to the filter machines to secure the smooth dissemination of water all over the grounds.

It is believed that the process has continued to dominate the market till 1980s.

Espresso Maker

The nineties in the United States saw the coming of the espresso maker. The stylish potent dark liquid just because of being a favorite in European communities turned to be a favorite after dinner treat. This then paved the way to the introduction of some assorted machines intended to create the perfect espresso. The primary principle is akin to the percolator. The pressurized warm water coerced through the coffee grinds and upwards into a container.

Bringing forth an identifiable flavor, espresso is created from a fine ground dark roast. The addition of frothy warm milk entailed advance expansion of the coffee maker industry and caused availability of coffee to be in a broader assortment of savors. Use of frothy warm milk created either a cappuccino or latte.

Plunger

The plunger on the other hand is a plain coffee making process that graced a lot of dining tables in Europe. It has been also known as press pot, coffee press, and French press. It is consists of a narrow cylindrical jug made of glass or clear plastic with a lid and a “plunger” which has a fine wire or nylon mesh serving as a filter. In the plunger, coffee is brewed by placing the coffee and water together and then depressing the plunger to trap the coffee grinds typically found at the bottom part of the jug itself. Black Coffee Lovers Don’t Drink The Coffee Before it Cools

by Carl Esonhouse

Regardless of the quantity of flavors, throughout the influx of coffee shops that sell European blends, there has been a renaissance in black coffee. The traditional cup of Joe is among the most beloved beverages in the world. There are numerous varieties and an array of blends that have been introduced from countless locations across the world. This, while the coffee producers continue to go after their market share. Nonetheless, with the array of brands and flavors in the market the majority of customers still rely on black coffee enabling their caffeine fix.

The American Heart Association recently stated that coffee contained antioxidants which are the substances which inhibit the formation of free radicals. Free radicals in the body are natural compounds which are believed to the accelerate in the progress of chronic diseases such as cancer. It follows then that a little coffee is a good thing.

Black coffee is synergistic to many people’s functionality the day after a night where there was a heavy consumption of alcohol. The power of black coffee, which is determined by the period that the hot water stays in the coffee grounds mixture, is a sense of personal taste. When attempting to wake up from the night before that was filled with little or restless sleep like coffee has always been synonymous as a remedy. Notwithstanding the evidence, people still believe that black coffee will keep people alert when they are tired, the caffeine in the drink isn’t thinned down by the addition of other products. However the opinion that strong black coffee is a way to stay awake has long been debunked.

From the ancient days of pouring ground coffee straight into the hot rolling water to today’s automatic coffee makers with their brew controls which watch the time and temperature, black coffee has been a mainstay of the longest lasting formulas that make up the food chain. In spite of all the efforts to brew the ideal cup of coffee, individual tastes may prevent that from happening on a massive scale. It still takes a coffee shop to satisfy some. On the other hand everyone still believes that they have the ideal recipe.

The real coffee lovers call flavored coffee, coffee-based soup. They call it flavored hot water masquerading as soup pushed through coffee grounds. They see it as an attempt to create a new food item. For genuine coffee lovers, the addition of milk, and sugar; let alone the addition of flavors, to their beloved black coffee is an abomination. In fact, numerous folk are convinced that caffeine’s tart flavor is overpowered by adding flavorings and make it more palatable so that they can benefit from the stimulating affects of the drug.

The preponderance of black coffee lovers don’t drink the coffee before it cools, but there is an increasing market for what is called iced coffee, which is regularly served without additional flavorings or sweeteners. However the debate will go on as it is a fact that coffee is one of the most beloved beverages in the world.

How To Brew A Good Cup Of Coffee

by Jan Chambers

People are always looking for ways to brew the best cup of coffee. It’s not that hard, and there are some easy steps you can follow. Knowing how to brew coffee properly will allow you to enjoy your cup and give you the best result that a good brew can give you.

The first step is to take a look at the equipment you are using. You need to start with a clean machine. You will want to make sure that your coffee maker and pot are clean. If your pot and brewer are old and really heavily stained, you may want to consider a new brewer. The coffee stains will make the coffee bitter.

Use cold filtered water to brew the coffee. Filtered water should have no taste, or funny chemicals in it. Starting with cold water gives you a cleaner brew. The coffee is made up of mostly water, so good water is 90 percent of a good cup. We recommend you use the same kind of water you would drink plain. If you wouldn’t drink water from the faucet, then don’t use it to brew coffee.

When it comes to coffee, we recommend using a premium, or high quality coffee. Using premium coffee beans will give you the freshest and more flavorful tasting pot of coffee as well. These coffees are better balanced between bitterness, and roast. Your beans should be stored in an air tight container. Whole beans are recommended, but if that is not an option, then find a good quality ground coffee.

The next, is how much coffee to use. You want to use two rounded tablespoons per cup, which is about one cup. You can also find coffee measuring spoons to help. Just use more coffee if you want a coffee that is stronger.

What to do when the coffee is done brewing. First, remove the filter and discard. Allowing the filter to sit in your coffee machine means that coffee will continue to drip in to your freshly brewed coffee. Although the coffee is fresh in your carafe, the last parts of the water draining out of the grounds is bitter. Because of this you run the risk of ruining a fresh pot of coffee. Plan on drinking your coffee as soon as possible.

Coffee storage tips. First, you don’t need to keep it in the freezer. Assuming you drink coffee on a regular basis, freezing does not help you. All you need to concern yourself with is keeping it in an air tight container. Keeping the coffee out of the air it the most important thing you can do.

The last tips is to enjoy your coffee right away. Coffee loses its flavor as soon as it hits the air. Serve your coffee fresh and you will be able to get the most out of it. Most important, enjoy!

A Coffee Bean Grinder Guarantees Freshness

by Ned Dagostino

True coffee lovers know that fresh ground coffee tastes best. And that’s why so many coffee aficionados are now using their own coffee bean grinder to get that fresh taste every day in their homes.

But there’s more to it than just freshness. If you grind your own beans you can make the grind as fine as you desire. This is very important to a true coffee lover. With this in mind, perhaps you are now at least a little curious about trying this on your own.

If you haven’t tried grinding your own beans yet, maybe you think it’s hard to do. It isn’t. Or maybe you think it’s a messy process. Again, this simply isn’t correct.

The only argument that “holds water” is that it’s just easier to open a can and start brewing. And while this is true, once you taste the difference between store bought coffee in a can and freshly ground beans, you’ll realize quickly just what you’ve been missing.

As soon as coffee beans are ground they begin to lose some of their flavor and aroma. That’s the reason grinding the beans yourself will result in a better tasting and smelling cup. You can simply grind the beans right before you brew (the process is quick) and your coffee will be as flavorful as possible.

So let’s talk about the different grinders available. There are two that are popular. One is the blade grinder, the other is called a burr grinder.

Blade grinders are less expensive. Basically they function like a blender, only smaller. They use the blades inside to do the grinding. And while these are still better than buying your coffee in a can, they do not produce the best results. When you grind coffee beans you want to get a large surface that can be exposed to the hot water. The greater the surface exposure, the more oils and flavor will be extracted. Blade grinders do not produce an even grind, especially the less expensive models. The result is that most coffee experts consider them inferior.

Burr grinders meanwhile are typically used in high quality coffee houses because they give a much better grind. The burrs, or metal discs, are spaced to precise specifications, giving you a grind that is more even. A more even grind means a better cup. And it doesn’t matter what type of coffee you like best because these grinders are adjustable. So if you like Turkish drip or automatic drip, you can set your burr grinder to give you the grind you like best.

Not everybody likes their coffee the same way. In a lot of ways, perfect coffee is very subjective. But something every coffee lover can agree on is that freshly ground coffee just tastes better. So really, whether you get a burr or blade coffee bean grinder, you’ll always end up with a cup of coffee that is better than what you currently drink. Try it once and you may never again buy a can of coffee that is already ground.

And it’s just a simple kitchen appliance that will make that first cup in the morning worth getting out of bed for.
