Arranging Art to Showcase Its Beauty

by Sue Krippner

When you are considering arranging art in a room, you can include many forms of artistic design, such as a sculpture, a ceramic piece, a painting, or a photograph for a table, wall or mantle. Several combinations of art forms could be considered, depending on the room in question. Experiment with placement, but be sure not to overdo it.

Think about the size of the artwork before arranging art on a wall. Too large for a certain room and it could also overwhelm everything else and take away from the focal point. Too small and it could get lost and serve no purpose in enhancing your room’s decor.

Look at the size of the room and the projected location before you make your decision when arranging art. If you have a long wall to use, you might want to hang a group arrangement. For a short wall, think of a small but powerful piece.

When arranging art, lighting is a powerful consideration. Proper lighting will really highlight your work. Recessed spotlights are popular as is showcase lighting mounted directly above the painting, just like in a museum. Of course the windows can make a big difference when it comes to brightening the area near the piece. As watercolor, pastel and pencil may fade, make sure your painting is framed in UV protected acrylic or glass.

Color is a key factor when arranging art to accent a rooms design. One or two main colors in the art piece need to complement the color scheme in the room, otherwise it will look out of place. While its not necessary to have the exact colors in the room reflected in the artwork, it should have some shades of the main color in it. You could also look for an art piece that has contrasting colors that complement your space. As an alternative, you could bring out the accent colors of the room by matching the artwork to them.

Look at the style of your art work when arranging art in a room. Do not try and place an abstract piece in a room with a country theme. Look for art pieces that stay true to your rooms designed.

You will need to adhere to basic guidelines when it comes to arranging art in a room. Artwork must be hung at a level so that the center of the painting is at eye-level. You may place sculptures or ceramic pieces on a table or pedestal. Certain pieces may be displayed directly on the floor.

Keep the design of furniture, accents and window coverings simple and basic, if you are arranging art to be the focal point of your room. It is important that other elements do not take away the focus from your artwork.

How To Create Cards From Odds & Ends!…

by Anna Meenaghan

Why do we send cards? Usually for a special occasions, but often to give pleasure to those who receive them. It can simply be to let people know that you are thinking of them. With this thought, I decided to make some cards for other occasions, maybe using items you already own.

To give you an example, fancy paper, tissue, string, ribbons, stones, sequins, scraps of materials, why not incorporate them.

This menu card would be suitable for a silver wedding, big party, wedding guests or other special celebrations. The first thing you will need, is some card which is not too thick and about 24 x 21 cm in actual size. This needs to have a nice texture. Once you have this, fold it in half.

Before you actually fold it, make a line with a craft knife. I would choose to opt for making a line both near the top and the bottom of the card. For this you could use a coloured paper, but a ribbon or braid would probably be more effective. Strips would need to be 12 x 2cm.

You could, if you wanted too, then add a thin line of gold or silver paint along the outside edge, below your line. Your top and bottom line do not neccessarily have to be the same colours, they can be toning or at least one of them could have a small pattern on it.

Supposing this is for a silver wedding, I would most likely use a picture of the couple involved. Add it to the centre and then highlight this by adding a silver circle around it. Underneath my bottom trip I would put an item which, in fact, denotes each five years up to their silver wedding.

This would then leave you with some room available at the top of your card for any wording. However, say this was a young couples wedding, this need not be all that different. You could still use a picture of the two of them, cut to a heart shape. This could go in the centre, with a red border round in paint, ribbon, glitter or whatever you like. Then you could stick some confetti here and there, around it. Tiny plastic hearts could be dotted along the bottom of the card.

What you need now, is your menu. You could, I suppose, write on the inside of the card, but it is probably better to insert and attach a piece of paper with this, hand written or typed.

However, it might be you just want to make place cards, and really, the cost of these soon adds up if you buy these in the shops. I would attempt this in the same way. Using roughly 8cm of card, score it lightly down the centre and then fold it.

Use ribbon to go across your card, about 1 cm from the top. A narrow ribbon will do, but let this go well over the sides. Once it has been glued, simply cut the exta ribbon off.

It is possible in haberdashery stores to buy tiny little flower buds which you can then stick on to the centre of your braid. Bear in mind, you only really need the head. Failing this, you could make your own flower heads from tissue and put a small sequin or bead in the centre. With a silver gel pen write the guests name.

How Do I Make Pictures From Silhouettes?…

by Anna Meenaghan

How much simpler could it possibly be? This really is an easy method to make pictures to adorn your walls. They are generally interesting to the observer and attractive at the same time. They also make good presents for people and are remarkably cheap to make.

Of course, first you have to make the decision on the size of frame you require, as to where you want to hang it, and the area of the space. At the present time you can buy frames that will hold up to five pictures, but you may only want a double or a single frame for your first attempt.

So to get your profile to work from, it is probably best to get your subject to face sideways and then you take a photograph. Obviously this needs to be very clear.

What will I actually need then? Firstly, some tracing paper, masking tape, some fairly small sharp scissors, a pencil, a spray glue, several photos of your subject, some soft black paper, a soft black pencil, or pen even, some white paper with a texture to it and, of course, your frame.

Let us begin! Sort out which photo or photos you want to use. You then need to place your tracing paper over this, preferably on a board. Tape the four sides down with the masking tape. Now the fun starts. Make sure that your pencil is sharp, then trace round the outline of your photo.

Once you have drawn round your photograph, be sure to add a curve shape at the foot of your tracing. In most cases this will be at the neckline, to finish it off, as it were! Take away your tape and remove your tracing paper. Think now, if you want this enlarged or made smaller, to suit your frame, as, at this stage, you could adjust it.

Now tape the tracing on to your black paper, with your pencil marks flat to the black paper. You now need to draw strongly over your pencil lines to transfer them to the black paper. Bear in mind, I chose black, but you can choose your own colour.

Take your small scissors, or you could use a craft knife and cut round your silhouette. Do not rush, as this is a tricky operation and it may be quite hard to keep to the outlines.

Take out your textured paper next. You will need enough to cover the frame, with 1cm spare on all sides of it. Your silhouette then will need to be sprayed with glue and put firmly in place in the centre of your paper.

At this point you can add an outside border with a coloured pen or pencil, but this is optional. If you cut some very fine pieces of the coloured paper, you could add some extra details like eyelashes or eyebrows for example.

This is now ready to be framed and admired. Friends and family will love it!

Abstract Art And How Are We Supposed To View It?…

by Anna Meenaghan

When faced by abstract drawings, paintings and often sculptures we often do not know what to quite make of it! They often appear sort of far removed. What we actually see may be a spiritual form of the artist expressing him or herself.

So we are often left to decide ourselves what we might or might not see in the painting as we do not know how the artist arrived at this. Quite possibly the title was arrived at once the painting was finished, because the artist got lost somewhere in what he was doing.

Let us face it, this is not always easy! Often other people see things completely differently in a painting and it can be very interesting too, to actually have their input. So, what is the meaning of abstract? This is hard to define. I can only say these paintings seem unrealistic.

Imprinted on the artists mind may have been very definite colours, interesting shapes and formations, but in many scenarios their work may not have a base of something that is real. It is far more likely to be base on intuition.

You could say abstractionism shows great vision. It is confusing for people, as sometimes, very plain forms are expressed with others appearing very wishy washy and end up being completely misunderstood. It is fair to say it is not always expected of us to understand the workings of the mind of the artist.

If you take a peek at Jackson Pollock’s work, he seemed to show abstract expressionism so well. Yet he used his paint in many ways. He was not afraid to throw it on the canvas, smear, or even let it just drip! He even spattered it and dropped it. He was a visionary! So, if it is a form reached by artificial means, it would be classed as abstractionism.

I sometimes wonder if we need to be a certain sort of person with enough sensitivity to feel the emotions of the art expressed, which probably seems to bear no relation to the original subject, which is being suggested.

However, I find that on the whole, this type of work usually holds your interest. As an example, if you see one of these works in a shop, or say on a company wall, you will probably realise that you cannot take your eyes off it. It sucks you in, there is just something about it. In other words, it gains an emotional response from you.

So, now, if you have painted an abstract, you can look at it in various ways, if you stop to think about it. Have I set out to convey what I originally intended? Or, was I just wanting to paint what I thought, was something pretty fantastic?

Have I got a title for this? Shall I leave it with no title and let somebody else decide upon its actual meaning?

One way or another, often it does not have to be understood and maybe yes, we can relate to it somehow. Now, where to actually sign it?

The buyer can choose which way the painting hangs if you leave the option open to them by signing it on the back!

Girl Tattoo Design: What Designs Mean

by Reese Lanter

A girl tattoo design differs greatly from men’s designs. With women’s tattoo, you can’t just pick a design based solely on your personal preference. The first thing you have to look into is the tattoo meaning. A tattoo may look cool, cute or exquisite but you wouldn’t want to get stuck with a tattoo that isn’t significant to you. In worse cases, some people get stuck with tattoos that have negative meanings. Here are some designs that you might want to consider:

- Floral tattoos represent femininity. You should be careful though because different flowers may have different meanings. Roses for example can have a variety of significances ranging from love to infidelity depending on the flower color.

- Stars are also popular as female tattoo designs. They can however also carry a variety of meanings. Nautical stars typically give off the message of purpose and direction or the love for the sea. Other star designs are simply reflective of childish fantasies or hopes and wishes.

- Tribal designs would look perfect on the lower back. A horizontal swirl of tribal designs can accentuate the sexy curves of a woman’s back. Be careful though. Some tribal designs are created by artists with no particular meaning. Others however are taken from real tribes like the Maori, Polynesian and Native American tribes. Your girl tattoo design may carry a particular tribal significance that you may not be aware of.

- Other designs may have clear meanings. Angels and crosses for example could communicate religious faith.

- Another favorite tattoo category are foreign alphabets and characters. You can have a Japanese or Chinese character that stands for love, friendship, power and many more. It is very important though that you get artists who can really read these characters. You can also opt for translators who can help you with making the design. It is not uncommon for foreign characters to have a few missing parts here and there and end up meaning something else.

- Animals are another popular design option. Sleek felines like a puma, cheetah or leopard would look great on women who want to exude strength and empowerment. Butterflies however are an absolute favorite due to their delicate features.

- Fantasy designs for women’s tattoo have also been around for ages. They seem to have become even more popular these days because of famous fantasy shows and movies. Typical fantasy designs are fairies and unicorns. Other designs however may carry a more powerful meaning. The phoenix for example almost always means rebirth and rising from the ashes again.

- You could also have your own designs. Some artists would be more than willing to come up with designs that stem from your own personal experience. A personal code between you and a significant other and the face of your baby are some examples. This is the safest tattoo design option because you are sure of what it means. On the other hand, a tattoo artist may charge extra for the design. Making the design may also take some time.

Your girl tattoo design should be your personal choice. It is important to remember though that you should know exactly why you would want a particular design. The significance of your tattoo matters a lot. It contributes to the impact of your tattoo.

Mosaics Made The Proper Way!…

by Anna Meenaghan

Mosaics today seem to be abound in our everyday life. Designers incorporate them regularly for all types of ventures. This form of art creates interest and originates from way back beyond Roman times.

So, first of all, what will you really need to do your mosaic? PVA glue or a water soluble glue, depending on which method you opt for. Grout, mosaic tiles, whatever you want to decorate, sponge, chalk or maybe a pencil, brown paper, face mask and goggles, nippers and a squeegee.

What are your choices? You can use like nuggets of glass, mosaic tiles, shells, glass beading, even marbles and now you can get tiles which are like mirrors. Smash some crockery or simply use pebbles. So, we cannot say we are stuck for ideas and materials. Some people go as far as to paint their own plain tiles with a porcelain paint. So you can do your own thing!

Tiles, when bought, have a brown paper backing. So, to remove the paper, you need to let the tiles soak in warm water. Then wash over the tiles and leave them to dry. You can start using your tiles directly from the paper, using an indirect method.

Get your brown paper and use a water soluble adhesive to glue your pieces into place, upside down. This way you will end up with a really smooth surface.

You then need to take a rapid drying tile cement and prepare your item with it and then put your tiles on to the wet cement. Do not worry about the brown paper now. Later, when it is dry, wipe the paper over with a wet sponge to get it off.

This is only the same as you would do if you were tiling a kitchen or bathroom. Use the squeegee to make sure all the cracks and crevices are filled in. Cleaning the grouting off with a wet sponge. It has to dry before you can start polishing it and finish the surface you have been creating.

And designs, what about those? It is better to start with something relatively simple, like geometrics, and move on to curves and circles, for example, when you are more proficient. Then, to cut your tiles to fit your pattern, you have two choices. Try the direct method.

An old fashioned way first, but do not attempt this until you have had a practice run. Hardie held over the tile. Use your hammer and tap the hardie, which then cuts away at the tile and, in fact, moves it into whatever shape you are aiming for.

Or you could use nippers, which is by far the easiest method. This lets you cut tiles in to quarters and halves by nibbling away, as it were, to give you curves or whatever you may need. Practice with some spare tiles first, until you are satisfied with the result. It doesn’t really matter if you have some weird shapes, you should be able to incorporate them into your design.

From the safety angle I would recommend that you wear the face mask and goggles. Use a hoover or dustpan and a brush to clear up any fragments of glass, crockery etc. It is quite a good idea to prepare your tiles in a clear polythene bag as this will keep any fragments and dust contained.

Girl Foot Tattoo: Finding the Right Design For You

by Reese Lanter

If you’re thinking of getting a girl foot tattoo, then you’re probably not alone. A lot of women are discovering the fashion of sporting a tattoo on the foot. Just like any other tattoo though, getting a foot tattoo is a major decision. Here are some important points that you should know about foot tattoos.

The Benefits of a Foot Tattoo

People may have different reasons for getting a foot tattoo. You might still be unsure though about the advisability of getting a foot tattoo. Why would the foot be a great place for a tattoo? One major reason for this is that they aren’t as common as lower back and arm tattoos for women. Although foot tattoos are gradually becoming popular, they are still comparatively uncommon. Getting a foot tattoo will make you feel more unique than other tattooed individuals.

Compared to other areas, foot tattoos are also less obvious. This is important for some people who want to keep their tattoos discreet. You may want for example to have a tattoo of something significant but do not want to flash it outright for the whole world to see. A foot tattoo would therefore be perfect. You can have a small design that you can show or hide at your own discretion.

Girl Foot Tattoo Disadvantages

There are some tattoo artists who don’t do foot tattoos. This is because there can be a couple of hitches to foot tattoos. This is also most likely why the foot isn’t as popular as other tattoo sites. One major concern is that the ink on foot tattoos tends to spread, scatter or blur faster than those on other tattoos. You may have to get your tattoo re-inked more often than other tattoos.

Compared to those on other areas, foot tattoos are more painful. This is because of the foot’s flesh being close to capillaries and bones. Unless you haven’t noticed yet, most tattoos are located in areas with a lot of flesh. This minimizes the pain during the tattooing process. The pain of a foot tattoo can actually extend beyond the actual process. It shouldn’t be a surprise to you if you feel some discomfort while using your feet.

Aside from pain, you have to think of recovery. It can make more than two weeks for a foot tattoo to heal. In this span of time, the tattoo has to be kept dry and clean. You also have to avoid getting your tattoo rubbed. This is very difficult to do with a foot tattoo. You may have to spend the entire time away from closed shoes.

Precautions

Now you know the unique challenges of getting a foot tattoo. You might still want to get one though. If you are really bent on it then the best thing that you can do is to find an experienced tattoo artist. Remember that not everyone does foot tattoos. You should therefore pick one who knows how to do it properly and with the least pain possible. You could also settle for smaller designs. These would be ideal for feminine feet. You would also have to deal with less pain and blurring.

Even tattoo hobbyist will find a different set of challenges in getting a girl foot tattoo. You have to be sure though that you are absolutely willing and ready to meet the unique concerns of a foot tattoo.

How Can I Create A Suncatcher?…

by Anna Meenaghan

I find that suncatchers are a charming item and people always seem to admire them. They can be made in endless ways and with different items. Stained glass appears to be in great demand, but they are quite often made from plastic sheeting, which I am about to explain for novices. These items are so artistic yet often so very easy to make yourself and you will find that old and young people alike, really appreciate them!

One advantage with these is that they are fascinating in the way that they catch the light and, of course, the places you can actually hang them is endless. Your hallway, bedroom window, outside, wherever you like. It is easy to recognise why they might be popular!

So, let us start and this one is meant for a window! And here is a list of what you will need to make this. A roll of lead tape, a paintbrush, a hook of the rubber suction kind, 1×2cm of string in length, water pot, glass paints and thinner and a tube of glass outliner. On top of this you will also need an A5 size acrylic sheet and a pattern to work from.

It will probably give you more satisfaction if you go ahead and make your own design, but if this is not the case, go ahead and visit your local art supply shop. I am sure they must be able to sell you these.

Where do I start on this? First take the film off the plastic sheet. Then you need to cut a length of the lead taping. Next you peel the back off this and continue by sticking this all along the edges of your sheet of acrylic.

Carry on now by cutting about 4cm of the lead tape and put your string into the centre and proceed to wrap the tape around the string, leaving the tape open at the end. You will then need to stick this to one edge of the acrylic sheet to make a hook to be able to hang it with.

What next? Well, let us move on to our design. This has to be put under your acrylic sheet. Then take your tube of outliner and draw your design on to the top of your sheet. Now you must leave it to dry.

Using your glass paints you can then start filling in your designs. This could take a little while to dry, so I would most probably leave it overnight. Now, if you have used glass paints with solvent in them, you will need to wash and clean your brushes with the thinner.

However, if you have used water based paints, just rinse and wash your brushes in water. The final touch will be to stick the suction hook on your window or door and hang your suncatcher. Let the light stream through it and get pleasure from it every day. Once you have made one you can get more adventurous and go on to make different varieties, and you need never wonder about what gifts to buy for people again.

Ease Your Wallet By Making Containers From Tin Cans!…

by Anna Meenaghan

In the present climate with the finances stretched to the limit, we have to try to make sacrifices and save money where we can. Is it any wonder that the general public are turning to home made crafts to decorate their homes etc.

Containers can be used for so many items, so let us see what we can do! For example, you can store scissors, cutlery, crayons, brushes, tools, seeds, plants, rubbish or glues in them, so they are a very handy item to have in the home. This is just a for instance. So you get the idea!

Alright, so tell me what I need for this? Hardly anything actually! My suggestions are some craft paints in varying colours or even emulsion will do, a paintbrush, and a pencil.

As for other items, you will also need a metal primer, a polyurethane varnish, some tracing paper and, naturally, gather up your tin cans or cylinders. Lets get cracking!

The first thing on the agenda is to remove any lids, as you are pretty unlikely to need these. The important thing to watch here is, that that you do not have any jagged tops on your cans. Personally, I would make jolly sure that I had filed them well down.

We move on now to reaching for the primer and brushing a coat of this to the outside and inside of the can. This is an important step, so make sure you have covered the areas well and do give this plenty of time to dry. Then you can think about your design for small or large cans.

We cannot continue until we have our design. As an example, you could use bright patterns, circles, sunflowers, stars, cars, trees etc. It will entirely depend on what you want it for and, of course, whom.

So really, you need to draw a freehand design, or you could choose something from a magazine or book and trace it, in fact, on to your paper. Should you think then it is too small, you can always enlarge it in a photo copy machine, or even make it smaller if it is too large.

Then all you really need to do is to trace the drawings on to the tins and add any other markings in. We have now arrived at the painting stage, so use your craft paints or emulsion and paint the inside of your cans in a plain colour. On the outside you can paint a background colour and continue by filling in your design details.

If you have simply done bright patterns, you could add a border at the top or bottom edge to give it clarity.

This is practically finished now as all that is needed when it is dry, to apply a couple of coats of varnish, but let each coat dry thoroughly.

Watch the Design Budget Make For Happy Clients

by Veronica Wakeham

Over the past ten years I have given plenty of design presentations to land projects as a Vancouver interior designer. Client satisfaction in interior design is often as much a matter of numbers as it is colors. My clients would find it unusual not to have early discussions concerning budgets.

Once a range has been decided upon I can proceed in confidence. Otherwise I am just guessing at what to recommend because quality goes up with price. They must be considered together. The materials list in a design project often runs over a few pages and sourcing this list of home accessories, furnishings, art, and trade supplies, things like tile and paint and flooring, adds up to many hours of work for me. Spend too much in one area and I’m out of funds before I am half way through.

All the space planning and color coordination concepts a designer can show on renderings and CAD drawings will fade if later they have to deliver an inflated budget to a client. Or worse if designers spend a lot of time on concepts that were never affordable to begin with they wind up as disappointed as the client.

All the design concepts in the world can be created and implemented for a price. Rarely does the job come along where that is the case however. In the real world a client has a need and a range of funds they can put towards meeting that need. They want to trust the designer as a creative resource but also one that is worth the investment. Be open about budget encourage the discussion of costs.

A polite and professional discussion about budget held early will resolve numerous ambiguities later. The quality of materials will show in the cost. To do a job on a tighter deadline will affect the cost and availability of trades. The suppliers that need deposits will be looking to the designer before finalizing an order. This is too much to leave to uncertainty.

Within a block of my showroom there are dozens of skyscrapers, a cruise ship terminal and convention centre and major high-end shopping. Even the passport office is my neighbor. I see thousands of professionals a week and talk to dozens about design. The common dilemma is a shortage of time. Too busy lives. They get to know my capabilities and turn the job of design over to me so they can get on with their busy lives.

Having a figure to guide purchasing is a great tool to both the designer and the client. It allows an objectivity that overrides unrealistic purchases. It is the friend of the change order. It allows designers to discuss figures and additional purchases calmly alluding to the established budget and scope of work agreed to.

During an interior design presentation, color boards get examined, fabric swatches handled and looked at in good light, and drawings for space planning are discussed to see if they make sense for the way the rooms are to be used. A lot of the concepts must be left to the imagination of the client until they have been created. Budget is not one of them.
